From The Principal

Happy New Year to all the St Hilda’s family!
It was lovely to have record numbers of new and old families mingling in the humidity at Sunday’s Sundowner. I do hope new families were able to connect with parents in the same year. Boarding families, I know were able to make important contacts. Thank you to the Parents and Friends Association which hosted the event and to the Development Office team who supported it.
I remind you of the New Parent Morning Teas this week which provide another opportunity for parents to meet each other. Junior School parents meet in the Cortile at Chidley at 10.00am on Thursday 5 February. Senior School parents meet in the Gallery on the Bay View campus on Friday at 10.00am. Students gain most from their school life when there is a real partnership between school and home.
We welcome several new staff, more than usual because increased student numbers have meant additional classes. The Junior School now has its full complement of classes.

  • Junior School: Ms Erin Jones, Ms Merrilee Jongsma, Mrs Jessica Nailer, Mrs Paula Nicholls, Mrs Kerry Pemberton, Mr Heath Pozzi and Miss Lisa Soroko and Mrs Susan Ashby Mrs Moira Main and Mrs Danielle Magaraggia swell the ranks of Education Assistants.
  • Senior School: Mr Matthew Berry (Outdoor Education), Ms Charlotte Board (School Psychologist), Ms Nicola Dunn, Ms Alexandra Moreton (Science), Ms Simone Fleay (Languages), Ms Carolyn Gale (English), Mrs Stella Hodgson (Home Economics), Ms Clare Saunders, Ms Belinda Hill (RAPS), Ms Judy Stewart (SOSE) Miss Lauren Watson (PE)

Over the holiday period, school staff and contractors have been busy with maintenance and new projects. The staged power upgrade which will set up the Bay View Terrace campus into the future, continues well. Main cables have been laid across the campus to the new transformer located in Butler Way and buildings on the north side will gradually be connected to it. Spaces which were refurbished at Bay View included upper Catherine House and a new textiles room. Several offices were relocated. Construction commenced on the Art Gallery which completes the new Visual Arts Department. The Chidley campus had some refreshing maintenance done. Grounds staff have worked tirelessly at both campus so our gardens and ovals are looking magnificent despite a hot January. Thank you to all staff involved.
We congratulate our 2008 Leavers on fine TEE and INSTEP results. Students worked hard and were wonderfully supported by their dedicated teachers. More details of results can be found later in this newsletter.
I look forward to working with students, staff and families to make 2009 a most rewarding year for all.

With every good wish

Joy Shepherd

Chaplain's Message

Domine dirige nos
In preparing your daughter’s uniform for the new year, I wonder if you have spotted the School’s motto on the school crest.  We see it so often it may go unnoticed. In case your Latin is not up to standard, the translation is Lord direct us

An ideal motto sums up an institution using very few words.  The founders of St Hilda’s have ensured that we remain conscious of the faith that led them to establish a place of education for young women.  It was their belief that God would guide and lead the School in the right direction.

Today we can be pleased with the direction the School has taken and the many continuing successes we enjoy.  People generally have a less ‘bossy’ view of God these days, but nonetheless, we look to God to direct our activities, perhaps in more discrete ways than the old-fashioned view that God pushes us around like puppets!

The school year begins and ends with a celebration of the Eucharist: the Church’s celebration that God guides His people both in the words of the scriptures and through the sacraments, when we use outward signs to represent God’s grace working internally and invisibly.  Services throughout each term continue this theme.

In Religious and Philosophical Studies, students are encouraged to approach religious ideas with an open, enquiring mind. Through thought, investigation and reflection, students are able to make informed decisions about personal faith and ethical behaviour.

Anglicans have always viewed the mind, given and inspired by God, as an important tool in discerning the will of God; every activity that takes place in School is an opportunity for God’s gifts to be exploited, nurtured and valued as students seek direction in all aspects of life, not least academic. It is not only for the Chapel or the RAPS classroom.

Perhaps next time you are ironing your daughter’s uniform (dads, that includes you), or you see the school crest, consider what the school motto says to you and your family about the direction life is taking you and the part that faith plays in it.

On behalf of the Anglican Diocese of Perth I take this opportunity to welcome all new families into the school community. We are part of a large Anglican family who hold us all in their prayers and value the work done in Anglican schools in connecting young people and families with the Christian faith.

Please contact me at any time with any concerns or questions of a spiritual nature and I shall be pleased to help you.

Year News
Year 12

It is lovely to see all the Year 12 students back and taking on their roles as senior students in the School.  The induction service on February 3 was a memorable occasion and it was very pleasing that so many parents were able to share in this special event.  The photos that were taken can be viewed and downloaded by students from the Year 12 area of Studywiz.  Parents of Year 12s should have received a calendar outlining all the events that will take place in this busy school year.  Copies of the calendar are also accessible to students on Studywiz.

The Year 12 BBQ next Monday 9 February will be an opportunity for the girls to mix informally with the whole year group and staff.  We will all be working very closely together and supporting each other in this special year.

The next eagerly anticipated event on the calendar is of course the Year 12 Ball, which will be held at Challenge Stadium. Please feel free to come and watch the girls and their partners arrive, or come in for a peek towards the end of the evening.  The theme is A Night with the Pharaohs and it is sure to be glamorous and unforgettable!  There is plenty of free parking available at the venue.

All girls are expected to attend school from 8.35am to 3.25pm and may not arrive later or leave earlier if they have study periods at the beginning or end of the day.  Essential Year 12 information is disseminated in the tutorial periods at the beginning of the day.  There are special areas for students who have study periods during the day and they have access to the facilities available on campus for research.  Developing the self-discipline to use study periods wisely and fruitfully at school is all part of the learning process.
I would like to wish everyone a very happy and successful year, as our girls make the journey towards the TEE and beyond.  Please feel free to contact me at any time with any queries.  Should you wish to make contact with me or your daughter’s tutor the email addresses are as follows: Jane.Putigny@sthildas.wa.edu.au

Jane Putigny – Head of Year 12
Year 11

I extend a very warm welcome to all associated with Year 11, especially those new to St Hilda’s in 2009.  I hope the year brings academic and personal successes for the girls as they undertake their chosen courses of study.

Our tutorial program has commenced with an emphasis on study success.  Throughout Term 1, guest speakers will be addressing the girls on acquiring good study habits and organisational skills.  The tutors and I will be working closely with the girls to ease their transition into this important time of their school life.

Please find below a list of the Year 11 tutors and their school email addresses, including mine, should you wish to contact us to discuss any matter:
Mr Basil Psanoudakis
Mrs Jane Walker
Mrs Judith Arrowsmith
Mr Jean-Louis Diaz
Miss Lauren Watson
Mr John Thorpe
Mr Steve Latwaski
Mrs Karen Shearer
Miss Kathryn Paul

It is essential that students who are experiencing difficulty with their chosen subjects, managing their workload, or Year 11 generally, make time to speak to their tutor, Ms Diane Maseyk (Counsellor for Year 11) or me as soon as possible to help settle comfortably into the demands of Year 11.  It is also important that all girls aim for a balance between their academic studies and cocurricular commitments in these initial weeks of the year.  We encourage the Year 11 girls to use the Tutoring Centre after school as a means of obtaining additional assistance and support.

A copy of the School’s Assessment Policy for Years 11 and 12 can be found in your daughter’s Diary.  Your daughter will be made aware of this via her subject teachers and it is important that all parents and students read the policy.

I look forward to talking with many of you throughout the year and I hope that 2009 is a happy and successful year for your daughter.  I will provide more information on some of the events scheduled for this year in the next Newsletter.  Please contact me at school if I can help with any queries or concerns.

Year 9

Welcome to the start of a very busy and exciting year for Year 9 students.  I extend a particular welcome to all new girls and their parents.  I am sure that you will find St Hilda’s to be a vibrant and caring community and the Year 9 program is both challenging and engaging.  We also welcome Nicola Dunn to the Year 9 tutor team this year.  Nicola joins us with a wealth of experience in pastoral care.

We have a strong pastoral care program in Year 9.  The theme for the year is The 3 Rs of Year 9.  Unlike the traditional 3 Rs, our program focuses on resilience, responsibility and reflection.  It offers many opportunities for students to grow and develop and to take on board more responsibility for themselves and for those around them.  In Term 1, we are focussing particularly on helping students to develop strategies of resilience, and learning to adopt positive coping strategies as they are challenged by new experiences both in and out of school.  The program includes activities as a whole Year group, activities in tutor groups, workshops in a two-day Good Thinking Program and the exciting four-day outdoor education camp.

Experts on coping from the Centre for Strategic Education in Australia have identified strategies that teenagers use to cope with problems which they have categorised into productive and non-productive behaviours.  One of our main aims this term is to familiarise our Year 9s with these strategies so that they can start to avoid the non-productive (or negative) strategies and embrace the productive ones which help us to become resilient.  We encourage the girls to work on these strategies in all aspects of their lives.

One key facet of coping effectively with school life is being well organised.  Please encourage the use of the school planner as this is a very useful tool to enable homework, cocurricular activities and leisure time to be balanced effectively.  We ask for your help in ensuring that students use their diaries effectively and we would appreciate the diary being signed each week.

Tony Hughes - Head of Year 9
Year 8

I take this opportunity to welcome all students and parents to Year 8.  The first week of term has been very busy and the girls have adjusted well to their new daily routine.

The Year 8 camp at the Ern Halliday Recreation Camp is coming up on Sunday February 15. The girls will participate in rock climbing, abseiling, rafting, surfing and a series of team building games.  The camp will also be an opportunity for girls to meet new friends and get to know their tutors and tutor groups.

The Pastoral Care program will start on the camp. This year we will complete the Aussie Optimism, Optimistic Thinking Skills, program designed by Curtin University. The 10 modules will be completed throughout Semester 1 and the course aims help children cope with the transition into adolescence and to combat risk factors such as pessimistic, negative thinking styles and low self-esteem, in an effort to build resilience and self-management skills.  The key areas of identifying feelings, positive self-talk, challenging negative thoughts and decatastrophising, will be the focus of the course. For more information please visit http://psych.curtin.edu.au/research/aussieoptimism/index.cfm

Please be aware that all students have purchased a wall organisation chart. Year 8 students often have difficulty in adjusting to the pace of senior school and the planner is a great means to help them balance their schoolwork, cocurricular activities and social life.  It is recommended that the chart be placed in the home where it is visible to parents so that families can participate in helping to make a smoother transition into Year 8.

All Year 8 girls use a homework diary which they should fill in every day.  This diary should be shown to you and signed weekly.  Boarders’ diaries are signed by the Supervisor on Sunday nights. Tutors will also check and sign the diaries and it is a means by which you can communicate with the tutor.

All teachers are keen to see girls settle quickly and tutors in particular are concerned that each girl feels at home.  Your daughter’s tutor will contact you shortly, however, if you need to get in touch with him/her earlier, he/she can be contacted via your daughter’s diary, phoned at the School or emailed at the address listed below. Alternatively you may contact me at Luke.Bostelman@sthildas.wa.edu.au  if you have any concerns.

Swimming Camp
The swimming camp was held on 28, 29, 30, January 2009 with 80 girls participating in a variety of activities.  All girls performed at a high level, concentrating on their skills, speed and fitness in the pool.  A highlight of the camp was the final day team building activities at Challenge Stadium which reinforced the importance of working together. Another highlight was the underwater filming and technique analysis session which was run with the WAIS biomechanists. Thank you to all parents who assisted during the week; your commitment and hard work is very much appreciated.  Congratulations to the girls for their hard work and excellent training.

Swimming
The Interschool Carnival is fast approaching and training is underway. All girls are welcome to attend training whether their goal is to improve their fitness or to make the team. Girls who are aiming to make the swimming team are required to attend a minimum of three sessions each week in addition to competing at the swim meets.

Support Groups

Parents’ and Friends’ Association
Welcome to a busy and exciting 2009! I look forward to meeting many of you at our events this year and, after the success of the Sundowner, I feel very positive that it is going to be a good year for our community.

The P & F meets twice per term at 7.30pm in the Staff Room and it would be wonderful to see as many of you there as possible. Any parent can attend the meeting and it is an interesting way to find out what is happening at St Hilda’s and to get involved with what the P & F does. Our next meeting is on: Tuesday 24 February 2009.

Art Fair
For the past 24 years, the P & F has hosted an Art Exhibition as one of its major events. We didn’t hold an exhibition last year as we held the Spreading our Wings Ball, and we have used the additional time to completely re-vamp our approach and delivery of the Art Exhibition.

This year we will be supporting the new look Art Fair with an opening cocktail party and a raffle which traditionally has raised substantial funds for the P & F and the School. The Art Fair will be held in summer this year, on the Chidley campus on 27 – 29 March. More information will be distributed during the next few weeks but please diarise this important social event.

If you would like to assist with the Art Fair, please contact Mandy McFarland in the Development Office mandy.mcfarland@sthildas.wa.edu.au

Tony Connolly - P & F President

St Hilda’s Auxiliary
The Auxiliary is another group of parent volunteers who create parent networks, run by the Class Parents in each Year group. The Class Parents (and any other parent who would like to attend) meet twice per term at 9.00am, at venues alternating between the two campuses. These meetings focus on supporting school events in the forthcoming term as well as ensuring that families have an opportunity to connect with each other in a social context.

Our first meeting of the year will be held on Tuesday 17 February in the Staff Room, June Jones Teaching and Learning Centre, Bay View Campus at 9.00am. I look forward to seeing you there.
Shereen Rindel - Auxiliary President
