From The Principal

Term 2 seems to be rushing by with lots of excellent work from students and staff alike.

Year 12 students have completed their Semester 1 exams and are learning a great deal by reviewing their exam papers. There is much they can do in the coming weeks to optimise their end-of-year performances.

Teachers are preparing Semester 1 reports for all students. Reports will be discussed at parent interviews for Junior School students; an excellent opportunity for the important school/home partnership to develop further. Older students will be reflecting on their learning and have the opportunity to share their progress with parents at the end of term.

The Year 10 Information Evening on 15 June provided students and their families with vital guidelines to subject selection for Years 11 and 12. With WACE requirements changing considerably from year to year, there is much to absorb. Please don’t hesitate to contact Dr Garnett or me if you have queries.

The School community has been treated to a feast of musical evenings recently. Congratulations to staff and students who participated in the Ensembles Concert, the Junior School Music Concert, the Year 7 Music Showcase and the Strings Concert. It is wonderful to see so many students enjoying performance opportunities at such a high standard. If you missed those or would like more, be sure to come to the Jazz Night on Friday 26 June.

Confirmation
A reminder that this year’s Confirmation Service is on Thursday morning 17 September. Any senior school student who wishes to be confirmed at school should contact Father Toby now.

With every good wish

Chaplain's Message

Confirmation 2009
Have you ever felt that your daughter needs a special blessing to help meet the challenges of life as an adolescent, or to give strength and resilience as she leaves school for the outside world?

Each year we are pleased to welcome the Archbishop of Perth, The Most Revd Roger Herft, to administer the Sacrament of Confirmation to senior school students.

Confirmation is a special blessing which confirms the promises made by children or their parents and godparents at their Baptism (Christening) to turn to Christ, repent of sins and renounce evil.  All these give candidates a sense of God’s life at work in them, to promote positive decision-making, focused on the goodness and light of Christ.

Candidates are anointed with the oil of Chrism to seal them with the gifts of the Holy Spirit and as a sign of God’s blessing for their continuing journey of exploration, questioning and reflecting on the Christian faith.

All students from Years 8-12, whether or not they have a Christian upbringing or background, are welcome to explore the possibility of Confirmation.  A Confirmation group meets throughout Term 3, in the open-minded, welcoming atmosphere in which we conduct religious education at St Hilda’s. Discussion is helped by the provision of a free lunch!

I encourage all girls to consider Confirmation as an opportunity offered by the School as part of the Anglican family.  It is also available to parents who are interested in pursuing the Christian faith.  Please contact me if you have any questions.

Sacristan Camp
Fifteen sacristans from Years 6-10 recently enjoyed a camp at New Norcia, Australia’s only Monastic town.  This is a long-standing tradition which I have been able to revive this year, with assistance from the Outdoor Education Department, and Mrs Belinda Hill and Mrs Kerry Satchwell of the RAPS Department.  Thank you to them all for giving their time to enable such a positive and fruitful experience for the girls.

Sacristans are a valuable part of the School; they give their time and effort to ensure the smooth running of Chapel services.  Those who attended were rewarded with great food, relaxation time and the unique experiences offered by the heritage and spirituality of New Norcia.  Most importantly, they were able to strengthen friendships across age groups, and develop their skills as Sacristans for the benefit of the School.

More camps and social activities are planned for the future.  I am always happy to hear from students in Years 7-12 who are interested in joining the team, which is open to all girls of any faith or none.

I look forward to continuing to receive your questions and enquiries.

Year News
Year 12

The Year 12s have just finished their mid-year examinations and I hope that the experience has helped them to synthesise the information learnt so far this year and that all students will gain some helpful feedback on their exam performance.  If problems are highlighted, I urge girls to seek assistance immediately and to capitalise on the valuable help available in the Tutoring Centre.  It is always beneficial for the students to reflect on their preparation, exam techniques, timing and recall.  Writing a short summary of these things for each subject will help to crystallise their thinking and remind them of areas to concentrate on during the next round of examinations.

The girls are very prominent around the campus in their beautiful Leavers’ jumpers.  As leaders in the School they set an example in dress and behaviour and I encourage them all to wear their uniforms with pride.  Blazers must now be worn for school assembly every Tuesday and should always be worn outside of the School in the winter terms. I also remind you that no student is to leave school for any reason without obtaining prior permission and that any girl driving to school must have written permission from the Principal.

Thank you to the School Counsellor, Ms Diane Maseyk, for all her invaluable help with the Year 12s this semester.  We wish her well as she takes maternity leave until next year.  In her absence, Mrs Helen Silver, a former long-serving St Hilda’s Counsellor, will be taking over her role.  Should you need to contact her, her email address is Helen.Silver@sthildas.wa.edu.au

Best wishes for these final weeks of Semester 1.

Jane Putigny - Head of Year 12

Year 11

The Year 11 girls have been very busy completing tests and assessments for their Semester 1 units and courses.  I would like to congratulate the girls on the manner in which they conducted themselves in recent weeks over this testing period.  It was impressive to see so many of the girls develop and follow effective study schedules and adopt good study skills to prepare and revise for the end-of-unit tests and assessments.  It was also very pleasing to see the girls ask for assistance and support when needed.

It is very important that all girls receive positive and constructive feedback regarding their test results.  This may be in the form of revising specific areas of course work or improving general examination skills.  I encourage the girls to speak to their subject teachers about any aspect of their work that they are concerned with and to continue to use the Tutoring Centre after school for assistance.

Thank you to all of the Year 11 girls who nominated for the 2009 Chronicle Committee.  This year there was an overwhelming response and an impressive list of nominations.  Congratulations to the following girls who have been elected as Committee members for  2009;  Julia Burvill, Eloise Foskett, Georgia Hodsdon, Cassandra Battaglia, Rosie Viner, Georgia Powell, Georgia Oliver, Brittany Potter and Aimee Reghupathy.  We look forward to their contributions and efforts in producing an exciting Chronicle for 2009.

Congratulations to Chloe Hayes who has qualified to compete at the 2009 Australian Gymnastics Championships in Brisbane in July. Chloe will also be vying for a position on the Australian team for the 2009 Rythmic Gymnastics World Championships which is a tremendous achievement.  Congratulations also to Anjelica Mallis who has been selected for the State School Girls’ Hockey Team and will compete in Townsville on 15 August.  We wish both the girls all the best in their respective competitions.

The Year 11 Dance will be held on Friday 24 July in the School Hall and this year the red carpet will roll out for a Cirque De Soleil theme. Preparations for the Dance have commenced and invitations are currently being designed by the girls.  The girls have also discussed supper, music and decoration ideas in their tutorial groups and made lists of suggestions.  The Parent Committee, with the assistance of Mandy McFarland in the Development Office, has been extremely busy acquiring equipment and arranging food for the evening.  Thank you very much to all of the families and to Mandy for offering their assistance. A letter outlining the School’s expectations for the girls and their partners has already been forwarded to parents.

Please note that reports for Semester 1 will be sent home during the holidays and will provide both you and your daughter with specific feedback on her academic progress in all subject areas.

Best wishes for a happy and rewarding remainder of the term.

Miss Kathryn Paul - Head of Year 11
Year 10

It has been a busy Term 2 for all Year 10 students with major tests and subject information sessions.  Many students have been involved with interschool netball, hockey, cross country and rowing and we wish them all the best with the remaining seasons.  Girls are rehearsing for the School Production of The Sound of Music which we all look forward to seeing next term.  It was good to see so many parents and beautifully- presented Year 10 students at the recent Evensong conducted by Father Toby.  The service was lovely with Hannah Miller and Emma Hussey performing their readings maturely and with poise. Thank you to the School Choir whose contribution was most appreciated.
Congratulations to Ashley Slabbert who won the recent interhouse cross country for Year 10 and Juliet Godwin for finishing 2nd. Congratulations to Sophie Clapin who has been selected to attend the upcoming Gondwana Voices Choir tour in New Zealand. We wish her all the best and look forward to hearing all about it on her return.

I also congratulate the following girls who were successful applicants for the exchange programme this year.  They are excellent ambassadors for the School and we wish them all a safe and happy journey:

Tife Adegboye - St Hilda’s in Dunedin, New Zealand
Soraya Cranfield, Juliet Godwin and Stephanie Rockett - Durban Girls’ College, South Africa.
Danielle Cheng and Gabrielle David - WAYO Girls’ School, Japan.

Thank you to Diane Maseyk for all her work as our Year 10 School Counsellor and good luck as she takes maternity leave. She will be replaced by Helen Silver so please contact her on Helen.Silver@sthildas.wa.edu.au for any concerns or queries.

Jo Swain - Head of Year 10

Year 9

It was very pleasing to see the excellent attendance of Year 9 students at the Evensong Service on Tuesday 19 May.  It is a reflection of their growing maturity that most girls took a very active part in the service and sang with enthusiasm. Special thanks to Father Toby for providing the girls with such a unique spiritual experience.  Many thanks also to our Year Representatives, Dinithi Caldera and Sarah Flores-Vargas who read beautifully in the service.

I trust that the Year 9 Parent and Teacher Evening on Thursday 28 May provided parents with a good opportunity to put names to faces and receive verbal progress reports.  It is always a very busy night for teachers and time restraints limit the dialogue that is possible in the time-frame.  This is one of many open forums of dialogue between parents and teachers available in the School.  At the end of this term, teachers and tutors will provide you with a comprehensive written report on the progress of your daughter.

As a Year group, our main focus this term has been the second of the 3 Rs of Year 9: Responsibility.  We began the term with each student setting short- and long-term goals, considering specifically how we can be responsible for the management of our own lives and at the same time be responsible in our support of others. This led us to consider the values we uphold, both in our school and in the wider community.

Each Year 9 student formally evaluates her values after a range of Year group and tutorial based activities.  One activity that was particularly enjoyed by the students was a values quiz in which teams of students carried out role-plays to represent a range of scenarios that highlight positive value systems. This quiz was watched over by Valerie Values (an elegant, red-headed bear).

In the final weeks of term we also call upon Year 9 students to reflect on their own resilience as they embark on a number of unit tests in their academic program.  This is a busy time and I encourage girls to make full use of the Tutoring Centre if they need extra support in any of their subject areas.

Year 9 students will also have the opportunity to see what subject options will be available for them in Year 10 with a series of subject presentations taking place in Year meetings this month.  We encourage girls to make selections based on their interests and to not make choices based on friends’ preferences.  We point out that this is another example of how Year 9 students are encouraged to make responsible choices in their lives.

Finally, I would like to thank Celeste Mullins and Christine Taylor for organising a social croquet afternoon for Year 9 girls, parents and families at the Nedlands Croquet Club on Sunday 21 June between 2.30 and 5.00pm.

Tony Hughes - Head of Year 9
Year 8

On Friday 29 May, Year 8 students represented St Hilda’s at the annual da Vinci Decathlon competition at Wesley College. The event involved teams from 20 schools who competed against each other in academic challenges including: Code Breaking, Forensic Sleuths, Art & Poetry, Mathematics and Engineering.  The team performed exceptionally well finishing equal 4th on the day, narrowly missing out on a medal.  The St Hilda’s team achieved consistent results across all of the disciplines with particularly pleasing results in Science, General Knowledge, Forensic Sleuths and Mathematics.  The girls thoroughly enjoyed the day. We look forward to future teams achieving an even higher result. The participating students were: Clare Moran, Holly Jian, Ayeesha Thevar, Kashmirra Thevar, Katerina Chua, Isabelle Claxton, Georgina Sweeting, and Karen Zwingmann.

As part of the pastoral care program, the girls have been focusing on homework and organisational skills.  I know at the start of this term many students had difficulty in managing the homework and assessment workload.  To help the girls, we have been working on strategies to improve time management and I have examined the workload at a staff level to help the girls with the transition into Year 8.  The students have also been learning different ways of studying for tests and the difference between study and homework.

I have recently spoken to students about the importance of internet safety and appropriate use of email. I have been concerned about girls sending chain emails and spending an excessive amount of time out of school on sites like MySpace and MSN.  It is important that girls take great care when using the sites and it is advised that their use is closely monitored at home as the best way of preventing cyber bullying.

As we move into the final stages of the Aussie Optimism program, students will be examining the concept of challenging negative thoughts. The girls will be workshopping strategies to cope with negative thinking and develop positive thinking skills.

An important date for the school diary is the Interhouse Athletics Carnival on Thursday 25 June; all parents are welcome to attend the Carnival to support their daughters. The Year 8 girls have also been involved in organising the Pyjama and Tracksuit day on Wednesday June 17 to raise money for Princess Margaret Hospital.  Girls will need to make a donation of $2 on the day.

My best wishes for the rest of term.

Luke Bostelman - Head of Year 8
Year 7

The Schedule of Events for this term, outlines the many opportunities the girls have had to immerse themselves in school life.  Miss Martinez, Mr Babbage, Mr Carlton and I enjoyed watching them compete and perform in a variety of activities.  We have been particularly impressed by their sense of fairness and their willingness to support each other.  This positive and supportive interaction among the students is very pleasing to see.

The Interhouse Athletics Carnival will be held on 25 June at Perry Lakes from 8:30am until 3pm. Attendance at the Interhouse Carnival is compulsory and only in exceptional circumstances will permission for absence be granted.  Girls need to wear House shirts, tracksuits and sport shorts. Please ensure your daughter brings all of the necessary food and drink she will need for the day.  A coffee van will be available, but supplies will be limited. The School will provide buses for those students who wish to use this service.  If you daughter will be catching the bus please print and fill out the form attached to this Newsletter.

We have recently been talking about the importance of taking responsibility.  Taking responsibility and acting responsibly can be learned and will help students to interact with everyone around them.  Responsibility is an attribute that is important for students to demonstrate daily and is the surest way to protect them from peer pressure and temptation.  Everything from looking after their belongings to good behaviour in class is dependent on a healthy dose of responsibility.  Responsible people do what needs to be done, fulfil their obligations, are accountable for their actions, use good judgment, and don’t let people down.

As we approach the end of Semester 1, I look forward to watching the girls continue to make further progress in all aspects of their school lives.

Allison Stralow - Head of Year 7

Visual Arts
It is a pleasure to announce our Artist-in-Residence for 2009, Peter Farmer.  Peter is an emerging Noongar artist who works in contemporary as well as traditional painting style.  The Noongar people are the traditional indigenous owners of the South West of Western Australia. Peter will be residing at St Hilda’s Visual Art Department on Bay View Campus from Weeks 8 to 10, Term 2.  While at St Hilda’s Peter will be sharing his experience as a practising artist with students and teachers.  He will be conducting practical workshops with students, assisting with classes and producing his own work.  Details of workshops will be advertised to students through the daily newsletter.  Peter graduated with a Bachelor of Visual/Fine Arts from Curtin University of WA in 2001 and is currently represented by Goddard de Fiddes gallery who showcased his work at the
St Hilda’s Contemporary Art Fair in April this year.  Examples of Peter’s recent work may be viewed on the gallery’s website, www.goddarddefiddes.com.au

Currently on show in the newly-completed Gallery of the Senior School Visual Arts Department are sculpture works by Year 10 Art students.  The theme “It’s in the Bag” is explored through varied materials and processes.  Students were given the challenge of questioning the concepts of functionality, form and materiality.  Ideas explored are far ranging, from Gemma Morcombe’s scrap metal handbag, Clare Longley’s dangerously weighty bag to Julianna La Pegna’s social comment on mass media and consumerism.

It’s Wearable Art Time! Organisation for the Interhouse Wearable Art competition should get underway before the end of Term 2.  Through House Art Captains, each House is required to organise a creative team to work on an entry.  This is an opportunity for imaginative, skilful, creative visual arts students form Years 7 to 12 to become involved in this multi-discipline event that embodies skills in painting, sculpture, textiles and choreography.  The competition will be held during week 8, Term 3.  Please pay attention to the newsletter in the next weeks for the date and time of the initial meeting for Wearable Art.

Physical Education

This event will be held on Tuesday 23 June at St Hilda’s Bayview Campus. All students will be marching in school uniform including blazer. Let’s hope for fine weather.

There will be no lunch facilities available at Perry Lakes Stadium. Students can purchase hot chocolate, water, juice and muffins from a coffee van. Please be aware that there are limited amounts.

The Carnival will involve Years 7 to 12. Due to additional events, the presentations of Year champions and the House trophy will take place at the next assembly.

The program of events and competitors is available outside the Physical Education Department. If students have any changes they must see their House Coordinator or House Sports Captain.

If students are unable to attend, Miss Williams or Miss Swain must be informed prior to these scheduled sessions.

Good luck for the rest of the season. Go Saints!!

Hockey
Years 7 and 8 Hockey
The hockey teams have had mixed results in recent matches.  The A team has been involved in several close matches which resulted in losses by one goal against MLC, PLC and Santa Maria.  The team has been working on positioning and distribution in training and this paid off against Penrhos where they drew 1-1, dominating the second half.  Buoyed by this strong performance, the team is looking forward to the final match against St Mary’s.  The B team has gone from strength to strength with good solid wins over all their opposition.  They have been passing well and have been strong in front of goal.  The C team has played two matches against MLC and PLC.  This is a first for
St Hilda’s and demonstrates the depth the School has in Hockey.  The girls won against MLC and drew against PLC.
Juniors
With our final round of matches still to be played our Junior As are slowly starting to combine cohesively and play some fantastic hockey.  They have proven in their last match against Penrhos that you need to work for the entire match and keep a solid structure.  They have been working hard at this in their training sessions and were rewarded for their efforts.  Our Bs have continued their winning streak over the last few weeks and have played some great matches.  They have worked solidly in defence and have been alert in attack, taking any opportunities that come their way.

Seniors
Good luck to our seniors with their final two rounds.  They have just returned from study break and we look forward to seeing them finish the season on a positive note.
Our goal keepers have been treated this season to some individual coaching by Toni Cronk, the National Women’s Hockey Goal Keeper.  They have been put through their paces at the sessions and hope they enjoyed this wonderful opportunity.

Thank you to all our wonderful coaches Emma Wood, Charlotte Board, Hayley Coetzer, Michelle Higgins, Alex Maskell, Caroline House and Guils Colli.  Your continued support of our hockey programme is much appreciated.  We are very fortunate to have such quality coaches.

If you are interested in seeing some National Hockey in action there are matches against Germany in July.  More information can be found on the Hockey WA web site.

Athletics Training
The athletics season will be starting up again in Weeks 9 and 10 of Term 2 on Monday 22, Wednesday 24, Monday 29 and Wednesday 1 July from 7am – 8am on the school oval.  Everybody is welcome to attend.  You may gain some valuable tips before the Interhouse Carnival on Thursday 25 June.

Last year, the girls who trained regularly produced their best times at the IGSSA Athletics Carnival.  They set a fantastic example for all members of the squad, and showed what is possible with hard work and commitment. This year, everyone in the squad can make a difference to our results.  A note will be distributed after the Interhouse Athletics Carnival and we urge all girls in the 2009 athletics squad to attend a minimum of three sessions.  All girls are welcome to attend any session even if they are not in the squad.  The IGSSA athletics team will be finalised in Week 7 of Term 3.  Please refer to training schedule to plan your sessions

This year St Hilda’s will be competing in a new initiative by Athletics WA called the True PB Challenge schools athletics programme.  There will be three other schools competing in this challenge.  The competition will be organised and officiated by Athletics WA and electronic timing will be used.  True PB Challenge days are on Tuesday afternoons.  The dates for the competition are listed on the training schedule.  Girls who are not playing soccer or basketball on this day are expected to attend.  A program outlining the times and events for each of the meets will be distributed at the start of the season and we encourage each girl to participate in at least three events at each meet.

Training times Term 3
Training will be on Monday morning at the new athletics facilities or at St Hilda’s from 6.30 – 7.30am, Wednesday and Friday from 7 – 8.00am on the school oval.  Some sessions may be held on Davies Oval in Mosman Park.  Please refer to training schedule for locations.

Attendance at training and games
For students to be eligible for awards and considered for the Sports Dinner and 20s Club they must attend 80% of trainings and matches.  Students are responsible for informing the teacher-in-charge of the sport about their non-attendance at training and matches.  The same applies if they arrive late to training and miss roll call.

Away venue and student collection
If parents would like their daughters to leave from an ‘away’ game term 3, a note must be given to the Physical Education Department.  Students must be collected promptly at 5.15pm from the ‘away’ venue.  If students are not collected on time they will be brought back to St Hilda’s.

We look forward to another great term of sport!

Rowing
On Saturday 6 June, the first rowing regatta for the season took place at Canning Bridge on a glorious day.  This was an exciting event and, for our Year 9 and Freshmen girls, it was their first chance to put their new skills to the test. The girls performed well with all crews learning about the intricacies of racing and having a chance to put their race plans in place.

The Freshmen A quad scull was the first St Hilda’s crew to record a win this season, carrying on the St Hilda’s tradition in the Freshman category. Our senior crews are rowing well with both the First and Second Eights coming 3rd in their races. With only a week before their next regatta, the girls were impressive at training with new focus and commitment and the desire to improve, although numbers were depleted due to sickness.

The second regatta was held on Saturday 13 June with many excited girls keen to improve on their results of the previous week. We were blessed with another glorious day and calm water. Well done to the Freshies who rowed extremely well in their quad sculls with all three crews finishing 2nd in their respective races. A special mention must go to our Year 9 New Zealand exchange student, Maddie Parker who came down at 6.30am to be a spectator for the day and was a last-minute inclusion into the Freshie C quad.  We hope you enjoyed your experience and are available next regatta! All crews made improvements in their technique and this was reflected in the overall points tally for the day where we almost doubled our points from the first regatta. Keep working hard to make the small changes each week as they will pay off in the long term.

Thank you to everyone who has come and supported our rowers so far this season and we look your continued support.  If anyone is still interested in joining rowing this year we have room across all categories for more rowers so come down to the boatshed to join us or see Miss Reeson in the PE department for further information.

IGSSA Cross Country
The girls trained three times a week and competed in weekend events for three months prior to the IGSSA Cross Country event.  Attendance this year was fantastic with our largest attendance of 60 girls at a session.  We have had a large turn-out of girls to training with 93 different athletes attending this year which is 20 more than last year.  All training sessions have been intense with all girls competing for a place on a 50- athlete team.

The weekend relay competitions and fun-runs have proven to be highly successful for the St Hilda’s teams and competitors this season.  In the Sunset Relays, Emily Moran and Susannah Stockwell’s UWA club team finished 2nd, while Jemimah Guelfi and Hannah castle’s UWA club Team finished 6th in a 26 team field.

For the first time St Hilda’s athletes competed in the State Short Course Championships at Perry Lakes, on Saturday 17 May where the girls produced some fantastic results.  We had the largest school team on the day with 26 competitors.  Susannah Stockwell won the U/20 Women 4km event and Hannah castle finished 3rd.  In the U/18 2km event Rebecca Weiner finish 6th, Jemimah Guelfi 7th, Paris Gray 9th, Lara Clegg 11th, Hannah Creeper 13th and Seraphina Bogle 14th.  In the U/16 2km event we had five girls finish in the top 20.

All Schools was also a success, where we had a team of 59 girls who competed. We had some fantastic results with Susannah Stockwell (Year 9) winning the U/14 and Isobelle Stanley (Year 11) finishing 9th in the U16s event.  The Year 12 girls performed particularly well on the day with Hannah Castle finishing 2nd, Jemimah Guelfi 9th, Rebecca Weiner 12th and Georgia Foulkes-Taylor finishing 21st  in the U/17 event.  As a result, St Hilda’s was named the Champion School for the U/17 Girls event which as an amazing effort.  Susannah Stockwell, Hannah Castle, Jemimah Guelfi and Isobelle Stanley have all been selected in the WA Cross Country Team which will compete in the National Cross Country Carnival held in Nowra, NSW, from 27 August – 1 September. Congratulations and good luck to all those girls.

Hannah Castle once again displayed that she is developing as a class athlete with another win in the Lake Monger 3.1km event earlier this term.  She seems to have a monopoly on this event completing a hat-trick of wins as she won the event in 2007, 2008 and now in 2009.  Congratulations Hannah.

I wish all the girls the best of luck for the upcoming IGSSA Cross Country Carnival.  I’m sure all their hard work will see them perform well on the day.

Foster Carers Needed
Foster carers are urgently needed for kids in your neighbourhood, and you can help!
You can be male, female, single, a couple, married, with or without children, working full or part-time, or even retired. As a foster carer, you play an important role in the lives of children in need.

There are lots of ways that you can help - looking after children for short periods or for a long-term placement, or even just on the odd weekend. It’s not just the child’s life that changes - your life will also change as you experience the rewards and challenges of fostering.

Call Fostering Services, Department for Child Protection, on freecall 1800 024 453, or visit www.childprotection.wa.gov.au to find out more.
