From The Principal

From the Principal

I hope students and families enjoyed the term holidays.

Several St Hilda’s activities kept students and staff challenged and busy. The Outdoor Education department organized a Coral Bay Adventure and the Shannon Horseback Trip. Both expeditions proved to be memorable experiences for participants. Eight Year 8 students, accompanied by Ms Jo Swain joined Christ Church boys on the Pilgrimage of Hope to Fiji. Students worked at St Christopher’s Home serving the children and the sisters. We look forward to hearing about their service work in assembly soon. Senior school musicians headed to the Margaret River region for several days of rehearsals and performances. Thank you to all staff who so willingly gave up their time to provide these enriching experiences for our students.

At the beginning of term we welcomed 17 new students including 4 exchange students from sister schools in New Zealand and South Africa.

We also welcomed the following teachers to St Hilda’s this term to replace staff on leave:
Wing Chi Chan                                    Mathematics
Carmel Croft                                       Science / Physics
Penny Gilmour                                    Early Learning Centre
Andrea Kurasho                                  Junior School Japanese
Neroli Wood                                        Career Education

It was good to connect with Years 11 and 12 parents at the recent parent teacher evenings. Supporting students in their learning is a partnership between school and family. Parent teacher evenings are one of the many ways we can ensure open communication between members of that partnership.

Term 2 is a busy one with many important academic and community activities. Please be sure to read the information contained in the newsletter carefully so you are up-to-date with issues relating to your family.

Chaplain's Message

What can your children do on a Friday night that is fun, safe and appropriate for their age?
The Anglican Church, through the ministry of St Lawrence’s, Dalkeith, has established a youth group which provides a safe, nurturing environment for young people in the Western Suburbs. There is a special focus on children from local independent schools and the group meets at MLC.  I encourage you to read their website, http://www.westcoastyouth.com and to make use of this great resource.

What does the Easter Bunny have to do with Easter?
The short answer is, virtually nothing, if by Easter we mean the Christian festival of Jesus’ resurrection on the first Easter Sunday.

In the English language, the old Pagan festival’s name Eostre has remained, despite the change of celebration from that of Spring and fertility, to the triumphant resurrection of Jesus. In other languages, derivatives such as Pascha, from the Hebrew Pesach, meaning Passover, are used. This makes a connection with the great festival of Passover, when Jews celebrate their release from slavery through the sacrifice of lambs. At Easter, Christians celebrate the sacrifice of Jesus, which put an end to the need for sacrifices. This is why he is known as the Lamb of God.

Christians, who are tired of their innocent and meaningful festivals being hijacked by the retail trade, have launched a new range of Easter chocolate in the shape of lambs, with a short explanation on the box of the significance of a lamb for the Christian Church. Unlike chocolate Easter eggs, which, hollow and very dissimilar to anything laid by a living creature, are devoid of any meaning, the chocolate lamb is a powerful symbol of freedom and humility; values which are integral to Christianity.

If you would like to give chocolate with meaning next Easter, and support a new West Australian business, take a look at www.whythelamb.com. As an added incentive, all profits are given to charity rather than chocolate manufacturers.

How can my daughter get strength for her spiritual journey?
Each year the School welcomes the Archbishop of Perth or his representative to celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation. All girls from Years 8-12 are welcome to consider whether they would like to be Confirmed.

In this sacrament, candidates receive the blessing of the Holy Spirit and affirm their Christian faith, to prepare them for life’s journey. It may be seen as a blessing for the years of adolescence, or for those preparing for life after school. It is never too late to be Confirmed, so enquiries from parents are also welcome. Classes for students operate during school time in Term 3.  Please take time to consider with your daughter whether she would like to take part in the classes and explore the possibility of Confirmation.

Please contact me at any time with enquiries of a religious or spiritual nature, to discuss the sacraments that are available to your daughter, or any aspect of the Anglican ethos of St Hilda’s. I will be pleased to help you.

Year News
Year 12

It was good to see all the parents at the Parent-Teacher evening on Tuesday 28 April.  I hope that you and your daughter gained some valuable feedback and suggestions for maximising future performance.

I trust that all the girls are refreshed after the holidays and ready to tackle a busy term.  They will soon be facing the challenge of their first set of examinations which begin in Week 5.  I encourage all students to implement a steady and well-planned revision and study timetable in preparation for the exams.  Help in this area is available from Ms Maseyk, the Tutoring Centre and individual teachers.

All students have been issued with a study booklet entitled Study and Success produced by Mrs Vicki McAlinden from the Tutoring Centre. Vicky has brought together all the best practices of study techniques and exam preparation in a very accessible and user-friendly booklet that summarises the various study skills that have been taught to students over their years at school.

I hope that students will settle quickly into an academic focus this term and realise that it is important to capitalise on their lesson times and the help available to them.  Study should now be the major priority.

I wish everyone a successful term.

Mrs Jane Putigny - Head of Year 12

Year 11

With the commencement of a new term there is much to look forward to for all associated with Year 11.  Arts Festival is over for another year and I congratulate the girls for their participation in making it such a successful day.

Congratulations to Claudia Perry who went to Melbourne in the first week of the school holidays to compete in the Australian Age Diving Championships.  This is the tenth time Claudia has been a State representative for diving and I commend her for winning two bronze medals in the Platform and Synchronised events.  Claudia also recently represented St Hilda’s in the All Schools State Championships where she won the Platform title, and at the WA State Championships, Claudia won the State title.

This is a very busy term academically for the Year 11s and, although formal examinations are not scheduled in Semester 1, a number of tests will be held throughout this term.  The girls should revise the work they have completed so far in their courses, ask for assistance from their teachers when required and use the Tutoring Centre after school.  The teachers of each subject area will shortly inform students of the dates and formats of the tests and it is essential that the girls try to maximise their potential by preparing well in advance for the weeks ahead.

Our focus for the Tutorial Programme in Term 2 is on Study Skills and Mrs McAlinden will present a workshop on Monday 18 May to assist the girls in these areas.  Mrs Naude from the Library will also present information on library research skills to help the girls effectively prepare for future tests and assignments.

It was very pleasing to see so many parents attend the Year 11 Parent/Teacher Evening on Tuesday 5 May.  Please note that the girls will receive an academic report at the end of Semester 1.  Year 11 examinations will be held in Semester 2 during the second week of the Term 3 holidays and in the first week of Term 4.

The Year 11 Tutors and I are currently working to ensure that, as the cold weather approaches, the Year 11s are appropriately dressed in their winter uniform.  Please be reminded that the girls are not permitted to wear make-up and jewellery at school.

Best wishes for the term and please contact me if you have any concerns regarding your daughter.

Miss Kathryn Paul
Head of Year 11

Year 10

The Year 10s have returned to school rested and ready to go after their first term holidays. Term 1 was a very busy term for all girls and I congratulate them for the mature way in which they organised their time and became involved in so many facets of school life. Interhouse and interschool swimming was a highlight with many girls swimming personal best times at both carnivals. The tennis and volleyball seasons have now been completed with 39 Year 10 students in teams. The yearly Arts Festival at the end of term was again a very special day for everyone. A number of students displayed brilliant House spirit and were involved in group dance, group pop, group spoken and many more events. The Year 10 theme in the fashion parade of So you want to be a hero kid was a sight to see. There were guitar heros, lifesavers, the Incredibles and lollipop men. Congratulations to all students who got involved with such enthusiasm and creativity.

This term we will focus on assisting all students with subject selection for Year 11. During tutorial time on Mondays there will be presentations on the many different subjects available in Year 11. There is also a parent and student information evening in the Roger Goode on Monday 15 June where teachers from all subject areas will display their information and answer any specific enquiries parents or students may have. A package of information will also be given to every student to assist in the process of selecting the right subject.

Thank you for your prompt response in returning camp forms, it is much appreciated. Groups that will be attending each camp as follows:
Camp 1 – Saturday 10 OCTOBER to Friday 16 OCTOBER: 10F1, 10B1, 10G2 and 10F2
Camp 2 – Saturday 7 November to Friday 13 November: 10B2, 10D2, 10D1 and 10G1

During the term we will also be having Year 10 Evensong. This is on Tuesday 9 June from 5:00 – 6:00pm in the School Chapel and is a compulsory event for all students. Parents are encouraged to attend and join in this relatively short but very special service. I remind students that they should have commenced working on their community service activity. Thank you to all those students who have already completed their 20 hours and handed in their booklets. If anyone is having difficulty coming up with ideas on how to complete their hours, please do not hesitate to contact me. Good luck to all the girls and their families for a very busy and productive Term 2.

Jo Swain - Head of Year 10

Year 9

The end of Term 1 proved to be a very busy time for Year 9 students and I have been very impressed with the level of participation of students in the wide range of cocurricular activities. It was very pleasing to see the wonderful musical talents of students displayed at the Orchestra and Bands Concert last term.  The excitement of Arts Festival also provided a wonderful opportunity for many Year 9 students to showcase their talents in drama, music and dance. The Fancy Dress Parade theme of Best Before produced very creative entries including giant milk cartoons, Bananas in Pyjamas and an array of past decade fashions.

Many girls are competing in a wide range of sporting and outdoor education activities in Term 2.  Following the Interhouse Tennis and Volleyball in Term 1, students have just completed Interhouse Cross Country, so we expect to see a very fit Year group by the end of this term!

As well as the many cocurricular activities that we encourage students to experience this semester, Term 2 is a very important time for Year 9s to concentrate on their academic programme.  I would appreciate diaries being signed by parents weekly during Term 2 and also monitoring of the Student Planner to help manage study time. Good study skills are essential to ensure that all work is completed by due dates and also to help reduce stress.

You will all have received at the end of Term 1 an information pamphlet explaining NAPLAN (National Assessment Program for Literacy and Numeracy).  In English and Maths classes, students have been provided with samples and information on procedures and sample questions so that they will be well prepared for the testing period.  In English, students will be tested on language conventions, writing and reading.  In Numeracy, students will be required to solve problems across number, algebra, measurement and space, and chance and data.

Students will be tested in Week 3 of this term on Tuesday 12 May, Wednesday 13 May and Thursday 14 May. Please ensure that there are no appointments that will take students out of school on these three mornings.

Finally, a reminder of two very important dates coming up this term.  Year 9 Evensong takes place at 5pm on Tuesday 19 May. This is a beautiful religious tradition in the School and it is a compulsory event for all Year 9 students to attend.

We look forward to having the opportunity to discuss your daughter’s progress with you at the Year 9 Parent and Teacher Evening on Thursday 28 May.

Tony Hughes - Head of Year 9

Year 7

Welcome back to all students and their families.  I trust you all had an enjoyable and restful holiday, and are now ready for another busy term.

Congratulations to Year 7 De Grey on winning Lip Synch at Arts Festival.  I received a number of comments about the polished performances of all Year 7 Lip Synch.  The lost lunch hours rehearsing were well worth it in the end!

This term girls will be involved in Interhouse Athletics, Netball and Hockey, debating and a Music Showcase.

Congratulations to the following girls who have been elected Year 7 Tutor Group Officials for Term 2:
7B1 - Captain: Emily Wilson, Deputy: Sienna Zimpel
7D2 - Captain: Emily Leung, Deputy:  Sophie Sowerby
7F1 - Captain: Stefanela Amidzic, Deputy: Natasha Dutton
7G1 - Captain: Georgia Repton, Deputy: Annie Lester

Dates for your diary
May 25 - Year 7 Chapel
May 26 - Year 7-10 Interhouse 1500m
June 8 - Interhouse Netball and Hockey
June 12 - Year 7 Music Showcase
June 25 - Interhouse Athletics

It has been pleasing to see a number of girls using the Tutoring Centre in the afternoons.  The Year 7 area is also open most Mondays until 4:30pm.  This gives the students an opportunity to have individual help with their school work and homework.  The teachers are a wonderful resource if the students show initiative in asking for assistance.

This term we will be exploring the value of Justice, Respect and Concern for Others.  It is very important that all students respect the rights of others, treat them with courtesy and respect and allow them to do their work in a safe environment.  All of us need to be mindful that friendship groups can change which can causes students to feel unsettled.  However, we can be friendly to everyone, regardless of our friendship groups.  It is important to equip students with strategies to help them to cope with change and reassure them that it is a normal part of growing up.  I have an excellent handout for parents on peer pressure, so please call into my office if you would like one.

Head of Year 7 - Allison Stralow

Outdoor Education
Teams Racing Sailing Squad
During the holidays, St Hilda’s sailors competed against 18 teams from all over the state in the Sunsmart WA Schools’ Teams Racing Regatta.  Our highly energised team of Lois Pickering, Lillan Agerup (Joint Captains) Bethia Blond, Maia Agerup, Ragna Agerup, Sophie Honey, Helen McLean and Naomi Read was among some of the strongest youth sailing talent in Western Australia, including people whom have previously competed at national and international events in their own right.

Over the three days of competition with over 180 races held, the girls faced a number of challenging conditions that many others failed to cope with. Unfortunately they narrowly missed out on a place in the final series by one point. Due to time restraints on the final day, the organising committee finished racing early, leaving the girls unable to finish off their last two races. Had they won these, there was a strong chance that they would have been placed in the final four, of which the top two have the opportunity to represent Western Australia in the National Schools titles in Queensland in July. As it stands, the girls finished as the first all female squad for the second successive year out of six other all girls’ teams and were forced to settle with a highly respectable 6th position overall.

Sailing is not an easy sport and the girls’ results were due to a lot of time and effort; they were strong contenders at this year’s event.  Their efforts were noticed by other teams, as they beat schools such as Christ Church, Hale, St Mary’s and many more. The St Hilda's sailing team has previously represented Western Australia once at the national event, being the second all female team ever to compete at National level. With such promising results, St Hilda’s sailing has an exciting future. Thank you to all those who were involved in the program this year, particularly Karl-Christian Agerup who acted as the team’s manager, and parents, teachers and girls for coming to the event and showing continued support. Congratulations to the girls for being a wonderful team to coach.

Blair Spaulding - Coach

Rowing
It is now just weeks until our first regatta at the Canning River in Mount Pleasant on June 6. Crews have been on the water in the early mornings honing their technique for this exciting event. We will be hosting a rowing breakfast for all families after training at the boatshed on 23 May. We look forward to seeing all rowing families and supporters there.

Rowing Camp forms are slowly being returned to the PE office. Please ensure that you return these as soon as possible. Copies are available if you have misplaced your form. If you are able to assist with breakfast and lunch preparation at camp please contact clare.reeson@sthildas.wa.edu.au

Girls who are interested in rowing but have not yet signed up should see Miss Reeson in the PE department as we would love to have you join us. We still have plenty of room for Year 9s, Year 10s and freshies (first year of rowing).

Term 2 Training Times
For all weekday morning trainings the bus departs from outside the Chapel at 5.25am, and on Saturdays at 6.10am.

Seniors: Monday, Wednesday, Friday 5.45-7.45am, Saturday 6.30-9.00am, Land Session Thursday 3.45pm-5pm

Rowing is the ultimate team sport.  If a rower does not attend a session, the crew may not be able to train.  A crew’s chances of success are greatly reduced when it is disrupted by absence. Attendance at training is mandatory except in cases of illness or injury. Miss Reeson should be notified in advance in writing where possible if a rower is unable to attend, or call Sandy on 0418 917 581 and leave a message at any time. The call must be followed with a note to Miss Reeson. By contacting Sandy in advance, other arrangements can be made prior to the crew’s arrival at the shed.
Thank you to all parents who assisted in making our Rowers Muesli. Bags can be purchased at the Shop, Reception and from the Development Office at $8 each.

The Rowing Support Group provides vital support to the rowing programme in many different ways. Please contact the relevant organiser if you are able to assist with any of the following activities:
Rowing Breakfast: Saturday 23 May 8.30-10.30am - Hale Boatshed, Matilda Bay
The Rowing Breakfast, funded by the Rowing Support Group is the traditional start of the rowing season for families. The girls train that morning and, while they are on the water, parents help to set up breakfast which they all enjoy together once the girls have completed their training. It is a good opportunity to see first-hand what happens down at the Boatshed and appreciate how hard the girls work in their training. It is a social, relaxed occasion to meet other parents and the coaches over breakfast.

Any parents who would like to help to prepare the breakfast will be most welcome - in past years, parents who have dropped their daughters at training have just stayed on to help, instead of coming back again later. Please contact the Coordinator: Tina Jacobs mtjacobs@bigpond.net.au   if you are able to assist or if you have a connection with a food supplier.

Pasta Nights: The Friday night before each regatta is Pasta Night. It is a carbo-loading, team building and strategy occasion for the girls and their coaches. Each Year Coordinator will be approaching his or her group to find a host plus two assistants who will help to provide the pasta for the night and one parent in each group will be asked to collect the Boarders. This is not an onerous job and it is greatly appreciated by the girls - plenty of laughter but also the tough talk from the coaches set the scene for the regatta.
Coordinators:
Seniors - Chris Walsh - Gillian.walsh@optusnet.com.au
Freshies - Noeleen Chesson - nchesson@bigpond.net.au
Year 10 - Margaret Hays - margaret_hays@iinet.net.au
Year 9 - Craig Gorfin - cgorfin@bigpond.com

Pizza Coordinator: After each regatta the RSG purchases pizza for the girls to enjoy once they have packed away the boats and cleaned the Boatshed. We are looking for a parent to be responsible for ordering and collecting the pizzas from a local pizzeria after the Regatta. If you are interested in fulfilling this role for the very appreciative (and very hungry) girls, please contact Simon Whitaker whitaker@iinet.net.au

Recreational Skipper’s Ticket Holders: Any parents who have a Recreational Skipper’s Ticket and who would be prepared to be on a roster to drive a dinghy at the schoolgirl regattas please contact clare.reeson@sthilda.wa.edu.au

This event will be held on Tuesday 23 June at St Hilda’s Bayview Campus. All students will be marching in their school uniform including blazer.

Interhouse Athletics Carnival
The St Hilda’s Senior School Athletics Carnival will be on Thursday 25 June at Perry Lakes Stadium (old) from 8.30am-3pm. All students need to be at Perry Lakes by 8.30am. Students must bring their House shirts, shorts, tracksuit, caps, sandshoes, socks, plenty of water and lunch. A change of clothes and wet weather clothing may also be advisable. There will be no lunch facilities at Perry Lakes Stadium.

The Carnival will involve Years 7 to 12. Due to additional events, the presentations of Year champions and the House trophy will take place at the subsequent assembly.

The programme of events and competitors will be available soon outside the PE Department. If students have any changes they must see their House Coordinator.
The IGSSA Athletics Squad will be selected based on interhouse results and class scores. If any student is not able to compete in an event at the Interhouse Carnival she is still welcome to come to IGSSA Athletics training and be eligible for selection in the IGSSA Athletics Team.

Hockey
Congratulations to all students who have been selected to represent St Hilda’s in the 2009 IGSSA hockey competition.  It is going to be an interesting season with the inclusion of a couple of new rules.  The girls are really taking advantage of the new rules and we hope to see this developing as the season progresses.  Please note that attendance at training and matches is compulsory for those selected in teams. If students are unable to attend, Mrs Brown or Mrs Higgins must be informed prior to these scheduled sessions.

Fixtures are available for collection from the PE office or alternatively can be viewed on the St Hilda’s website. Please refer to these fixtures for match venues and bus information.

All girls are required to wear the correct hockey uniform which consists of the blue PE shorts, blue PE polo shirt, blue hockey socks, shin pads and a mouth guard.  It is also advisable that they bring their PE tracksuit and a water bottle is essential for all games.

If you are collecting your daughter at the completion of an away game, the accompanying teacher must be given a note prior to departure. Each game is scheduled to finish by 5:15pm, therefore please be there to collect your daughter; otherwise she will travel on the bus back to school.

Years 7/8 Hockey
The Years 7 and 8 hockey teams have started the season well with very pleasing attendance at training.  The girls are very attentive and responding well to the advice given.  The teams are still being finalised and pupils should remember that attendance at training is compulsory and that they should contact Mrs Brown or Mrs Higgins if they are unable to attend for any reason.  In the opening fixture against Perth College the A team played solidly, particularly in defence, and were unfortunate not to draw the match, losing 2-1 in the final few minutes.  Tiffany Brown was the goal scorer.  The B team dominated its game, with Imogen Everist, Chandler Pyke and Catherine House the goal scorers in the 3-0 win.  Both teams have plenty to focus in training and the C team is looking forward to their first fixture next week.

Juniors
Our juniors have made a solid start to the season.  Our A team lost the opening match against PC but created many scoring opportunities that we were unable to finish off.  The girls are working hard to implement the new rules to their advantage and are consolidating their understanding of each person’s role on the field.  The B team had most of the play in its match and opened the score in the first minute of the game. Both teams now have things to work on at training and we should see some huge improvements in team play, set plays and strength over the ball.

Seniors
Both senior teams have made an excellent start to the season with wins against Perth College.  It was a real team effort to produce the wins. At training the girls have not only being working on their skills, but also their fitness.  Their enthusiasm for the game sets an excellent example for our younger teams.  The A team won 3-0 but had a number of missed scoring opportunities in the attacking circle.  The girls in defence did extremely well to ensure the Perth College team did not have any scoring opportunities.

Our Senior B girls won its match against PC 3 -0.  The girls created many scoring opportunities throughout the match and forced a number of corners.  Our defence pushed up early, making many interceptions - a great team effort.

The girls now play four games in a row and we wish them luck. Congratulations to the following students who have been selected as Captain and Vice Captain for the 2009 Hockey Season:

Here is a Great Opportunity to get rid of your old Electronic Equipment!
As an initiative of the Mosman Park Town Council, families have the opportunity to clear out electronic equipment which is no longer of use. It will be recycled in an environmentally responsible way, with most of materials being able to be reclaimed, thus conserving resources.

Items can be dropped off from 9am to 4pm on Saturday 6 June and Sunday 7 June at the Napier Street Carpark (corner Napier and Marine Parade, Cottesloe). You can bring along DVD players, iPods, televisions, computer screens, towers, mice (or mouses!), keyboards, video players, Foxtel boxes, set-top boxes, mobile phones, photocopiers, scanners and faxes. This is a free service, so you are encouraged to have a clean out!

As a second Council initiative, St Hilda’s will install a battery recycling collection bin in the Great Court. The silver bin has a close-fitting lid with a slot similar to a money box. You can dispose of AA, AAA, C and D batteries, button batteries used in calculators and watches, 9V and 6V batteries. The Council will collect and responsibly dispose of the contents.
