From The Principal

While students are working hard to complete the year’s academic programs, staff are heavily involved in planning for 2010.

Two major buildings have begun on the Bay View Terrace campus. A geothermal bore is being constructed 900 metres into the earth, powered by an electric drill to minimise noise. Once completed, the bore will heat the new swimming pool and air condition the performing arts centre. Earthworks have begun on the new swimming pool to the west of the Roger Goode. Completion is expected late 2010. Planning for the performing arts centre is nearing completion with construction beginning later this year and completion for 2011. These major developments ensure that St Hilda’s students have the best facilities possible to support their learning.

Life is changing rapidly for our senior students. Year 12 students are now on study leave following the traditional St Hilda’s Day service at St George’s Cathedral last Friday. This special service is a fitting way to wish the Year 12s all the very best for the weeks ahead. Year 11 students, having completed their final Year 11 exams, began Year 12 courses this week. The change in the placement of the Year 11 to 12 progression is so students can maximise teaching time for Year 12 Courses of Study.

The Student Art Exhibition currently on display in the School Hall is a wonderful celebration of visual arts at St Hilda’s. It features student work from Junior Kindergarten to Year 12 in a riot of colour, and vitality. The Exhibition is open until Friday 30 October. Don’t miss it!

Last weekend St Hilda’s was represented by four senior staff at the Education in Australia Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur. We also connected with old scholars, current and future families at an evening function. We value the opportunity to meet with our overseas communities. It is also important for our student body to remain diverse and culturally rich.

I look forward to seeing you at the many Term 4 events.

With every good wish

Joy Shepherd

Principal

Chaplain's Message

Please mark Sunday 22 November in your diaries. At 7pm in the Chapel we will have the traditional Advent Carol Service sung by School choirs. This is a beautiful, musical way of preparing for the Christmas season and focusing on its meaning.

Last term we had the rare opportunity of hearing a lecture from Professor Keith Ward, who is a physicist, Anglican priest and theologian. He has held posts at Oxford, Cambridge and London Universities and is well qualified to talk about Science and Religion. His lecture was given to Philosophy students, all Year 11s and a number of Senior School staff.  Ward is a colleague of Professor Richard Dawkins, author of The God Delusion, well-known atheist and critic of religion.

Professor Ward’s main thesis was that Science and Religion generally deal with different realms of life, which are, nonetheless, both real. Science deals with things that can be observed, measured and quantified, and religion deals with spirit:the realm of feelings, thoughts, memories and, for many, an external being called God. There are religions such as Buddhism which do not have a God but are still ultimately concerned with spirit.

The conflict between Science and Religion arises when they try to deal with things outside their sphere of knowledge. Religious people can talk competently about the spiritual aspects of the origins of the universe; when they try to reinvent Science, or question what is scientifically proven, they are not competent to do so. When Dawkins deals with Religion, he uses a child’s version of Christianity and a Western media version of Islam. He assumes religious people are all fundamentalist warmongers, whose God is an old man with a white beard, sitting on a cloud, above a flat earth. In a markedly non-scientific way, Dawkins has failed to research contemporary religion to find out what well-informed Christians and others actually believe about evolution, creation and God’s role in their lives.

Ward reports that, as a zoologist, Dawkins does not deal with the big questions of the origins of the universe. Zoologists and other biologists are more likely to be atheists; Ward is a physicist who came to faith in Christianity through his academic work. He, like many physicists, has found it necessary to postulate a being which is outside of time and which pre-existed the universe. This does not necessarily mean God as described in the Bible, or the Qur’an, but it does show that in this major, groundbreaking area of science, there is plenty of room for God.

I recommend the following books as a balance for those who have read anything by Richard Dawkins: Keith Ward, Why there almost certainly is a God: Doubting Dawkins and Professor Alister McGrath and Joanna Collicutt McGrath, The Dawkins Delusion: Atheist Fundamentalism and the Denial of the Divine.

As we approach many of the special events that mark the end of another school year, I remind you that you are welcome to contact me at any time with spiritual or pastoral concerns and questions.

Thank you very much for the generous response from the St Hilda's School Community to the request for Duplo for the school for the poor in Kathmandu.  Your gifts will be a very welcome resource for a school with very little and will provide learning opportunities the children would not otherwise have had access to.

Year News
Year 12

With the Mock exams over, girls will now be receiving their marks and feedback in preparation for the TEE.  Attendance in Week 3 is optional and students should wear free dress.

You will shortly be receiving a request to contribute to the Year 12 Gift which is traditionally given by the Year 12 girls to mark their passage through the School.  Donations of any amount will be received with great appreciation.

I am looking forward to seeing as many parents as possible on St Hilda’s Day, for what will be a moving finale for the Year 12s, and then at the end of the year for the Valedictory celebration and lastly, Speech Night.  Please note that attendance at the Valedictory evening must be pre-paid. It is an exciting time as students go through these final rites of passage before embarking on the next phase of their lives.

On this last term’s fee schedule, you have the opportunity to pay for Life Membership for your daughter to become a financial member of the Old Scholars’ Association. I hope she joins the strong world-wide network of old scholars and remains in touch with the School.

All students can look back on a happy and productive year which has showcased their the amazing range of talents and which has further strengthened the learning, skills and friendships that have been fostered over the years.

I take this opportunity to wish all ‘my’ Year 12s the very best of luck for the TEE.  May you all achieve to the best of your ability and be satisfied that you tried your hardest.

Best wishes everyone.

Jane Putigny - Head of Year 12

Year 11

It is wonderful to have the Year 11s back at school after their examinations.  It has been very pleasing to see the girls conduct themselves so maturely over the exam period and I congratulate them for their efforts.  I know the girls have worked extremely hard to achieve some excellent results.

The girls returned from the Year 11 break looking refreshed and they have spent several lessons reviewing their exam results.  We encourage all students to reflect on their performance and spend time going over the examination feedback received in each of their courses.  It is very important that the girls seek assistance where needed from their teachers to ensure they maximise their potential in future tests and exams.

With only weeks to the end of Term 4 it is very pleasing to see the girls meet the ongoing challenges of school life as they now commence their Year 12 courses.   Girls who are currently finalising their subject selection forms should speak with their course teacher or Mrs Helen Silver, the Year 11 and 12 Subject Counsellor, if they require additional guidance.

Congratulations to those elected as next year’s School and House Officials; we all wish them well as they take up their new responsibilities.  The girls will soon be busy preparing their food stalls for our Community Service Day on Thursday 26 November.

This term involves many activities which the girls are expected to attend including St Hilda’s Day on Friday 23 October.  Term 4 promises to be an enjoyable one with a variety of Year and House activities planned, culminating with Speech Night on Friday 4 December.  Please note that the final week of this term, commencing Monday 30 November, will be normal Year 12 timetable.

Please do not hesitate to contact me during the term with any queries.  I wish the girls every success for the remainder of 2009.
Miss Kathryn Paul
Head of Year 11

Year 10

There is no news from Year 10 this issue.

Year 9

It is very pleasing to report on the way Year 9s have shown a real concern for the needs of children and teenagers in both the West Australian community and in the wider context of third world countries.  The October edition of the Anglican Messenger contains two articles about the support Year 9 students at St Hilda’s have provided to the community by raising money for homeless youth and by supporting the programs run by Daisy House.

This term we have just delivered over 200 Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes to Samaritan’s Purse for distribution to children caught in the midst of war, famine, natural disaster and extreme poverty.  This simple act of generosity gives hope to children in communities and shows them that they have not been forgotten.

Presentations in Year Meetings have also reflected on the power of such gifts of joy and the accompanying message of God’s love.  It is wonderful to see students respond in such a positive way.  I take this opportunity to thank teacher Elizabeth Hille and three Year 9 students, Olivia Pavy, Maddison Jones and Courtney Reid who have just returned from the Pilgrimage of Hope to Nepal.  They each shared some of their experiences in a Year Meeting with the girls.  As they reflected on some of their experiences, they effectively communicated the wide range of emotions that they encountered. They also presented a strong message about the power and benefits of supporting others and encouraged girls to consider taking part in pilgrimages in the future.

This is a very busy term for Year 9 students and a very important time to focus and reflect on the work covered and the skills learnt throughout the year.  Our tutorial program is designed to support students as they set out to revise for tests and to ensure that good planning and clear goals lead to the most effective use of study time.  For many students it means a time to minimise distractions and learn to prioritise.  I encourage all students to take extra care to ensure that they use their diaries and the school planner effectively and I ask for parents’ support in overseeing the completion of homework and effective use of revision time. Each student has been given a set of special weekly planner sheets to fill in the times she uses for revision, cocurricular activities, leisure and sleep, to help maintain a balance and avoid stress as she approaches academic testing periods.

Tony Hughes, Head of Year 9
Year 8

Fourth term is busy for all the students as this is the time for consolidating what they have learnt during the year in addition to learning new skills and knowledge.  Summer uniform is required this term and the girls should be wearing their boaters to and from school every day.  Please note that cardigans and jumpers may be worn during the day but not to and from school.

Congratulations to all the girls who were in the IGSAA Interschool Athletics Team. The Year 8 girls came 2nd by the smallest of margins and they can be very proud of their efforts and hard work throughout the season.

The cocurricular program continues this term in both the Arts and sport.  The softball season is underway and many of the girls are embarking on their school rowing careers this term.  Some of Year 8 students are involved in the Years 8/9 production, Teechers, on November 17 and 18 in the Empty Space.  We have some wonderfully talented student, and parents and students alike enjoy the opportunity to watch the girls’ entertaining performances.

Thank you to all the girls who recently participated in the Samaritan’s Purse shoe box appeal. A large number of boxes was collected by the Year 8s and hopefully this will bring some joy to children around the world at Christmas time. Community Service Day will be held on November 26.  Year 8 students are responsible for organising games and activities for the day which gives the girls the opportunity to develop their organisational skills to raise money for the various worthwhile causes the school community supports.  The day has a carnival atmosphere and students are permitted to wear free dress for the day.

In the Pastoral Care program we are focusing on friendship issues and conflict resolution. The girls have participated in two sessions on how to resolve friendship issues, focusing on the difference between passive, assertive and aggressive behaviour styles.  The girls have role-played these skills and hopefully they will be able to implement them successfully when situations arise.

I look forward to a very productive Term 4.

Mr Luke Bostelman, Head of Year 8

Year 7

Welcome to Term 4.  Before we blink, the term will be over and the girls will have completed their first year as Senior School students.  It has been wonderful to watch them take up new challenges and adjust to changing timetables and classrooms.  Mr Babbage, Miss Martinez, Mr Carlton and I hope the students have developed life skills such as being responsible and organised, being tolerant of others, and are developing a positive attitude to learning.

Creative Writing Club
What happens in E3 each Friday at lunch? The creative writing club springs to life! So, what happens behind the magical door? The element of fantasy, mixed in with a fiery spark of reality and a silent whisper of sugar.

Each Friday, students attend to share and improve their writing skills, socialise and have fun.   Getting to know others and listening to their ideas about writing is an important bonus – there really is a lot to talk about, even though club members are from different Years.  There is no pressure in being in the club – no homework is required, no expectations are set.   All are welcome.   What unites the club is a love for writing regardless of the  level of talent or skill.

The Creative Writing Club has had some exciting visitors to the School, who gave the girls an insight into the writing process from the professional community.  This year, the students were thrilled to have Michael Gerard Bauer (part-time English teacher and children’s author) delight them in a creative writing workshop with his great sense of humour and years of experience.  The Year 10s were also treated to an entertaining talk on the creation of his books and ideas – in particular – Don’t Call Me Ishmael, and the presentation did not merely deal with writing, it was also about developing confidence and believing in yourself and your talents in all aspects of life. Members of the club also attended the All Saints’ Literature Festival, where they attended fascinating lectures from a range of authors.

Any students who are interested in creative writing are welcome to attend meetings, which are held during lunch-times in E3 on Fridays.

Desiree Goh, Year 11

Visual Arts
I hope everyone had the chance to visit the Student Art Exhibition during week 3. Congratulations to all Year 12 students who exhibited wonderful artworks showcasing their hard work and dedication this year.  They have successfully raised the standard and set a bench mark for future Year 12 Art students.  I wish them all the best for the forthcoming TEE Art.

Thank you to all families who attended Opening Night and a special thank you to the Student Art Committee and following teachers and students for helping on the night:
Mrs Judith Arrowsmith, Mr John Thorpe, Mr David Kyle, Miss Emma Potter, Eloise Fudge, Emily Lyons, Elise Ross-Adje, Oumayma Awaida, Melisa Mills, Pascale Brockman, Julian La Pegna and Lucinda Green.

All Art and Photography students will be able to collect work to take home from the Art Department from the beginning of week 4. This includes Year 8 Art students from
Semester 1.

Drama Department
Semester 2 has been an incredibly busy and rewarding so far. Mrs Wendy Wesson choreographed our IGSSA dance performance again this year in limited time, with a very talented group of keen dancers.  The piece was entitled, Permutations.  As always, Wendy’s choreography was intricate, challenging and dynamic.  The dancers were disciplined, well-rehearsed and the performance showcased some of the incredible dance talent at St Hilda’s.

The Year 12 drama students performed their final showcase in September.  It was a very entertaining and clever showcase of original one-person shows.  Each performance had been researched, written, devised and directed by the students.  Their original shows were then performed as a component of the TEE practical examination which was completed in the first week of the October holidays.  It is always a very rewarding experience to watch the girls progress through such an exciting and challenging Stage 3 drama course.  They have been a pleasure to work with and we wish them the very best of luck as they approach their written examinations.

The Year 10 Showcase was also in September and was a great success.  Students performed extracts from well know musicals, dramatic monologues, devised work based on a study of Macbeth and Commedia Dell’Arte.  It was a well-executed showcase with students demonstrating a sound knowledge of backstage and technical skills.

Term 4 promises to be just as exciting.   The Senior Drama Showcase is on Wednesday 28 October, 7pm in the Empty Space and involves our Year 11 students.  This will include extracts from the adapted play Merry go Round in the Sea and a selection of innovative, original, devised performances.

The Years 8/9 Play, directed by Miss Nina Alldis, will be performed in the Empty Space, 7pm on 17 and 18 November.  The play is called Teechers by John Godberand it explores the life of a group of high school leavers, who put on a play about their final year at school.  Tickets are $10 each and are available from the drama office at recess.

The cocurricular Speech and Drama students have been busily rehearsing dramatic scenes, improvisation, poetry, prose readings and speech theory as they approach examinations with Trinity Guildhall and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA).

Thank you to all the parents who have supported us this year, with special thanks to Inga Hunt, Chris McLeod and Sally Manford who coordinated costumes and props for the major School Production this year.

An Evening of Song
Bravo to the 150 singers from Years 5 - 12 who sang in the stunning An Evening of Song on 16 September. This featured six wonderful Senior School choirs, directed by Anna Hayward (2003) and Virginia Page (2005) along with Coro Angelico (specialists singers in Years 4-6), directed by Tess Tsokos (2000).   An exceptional effort by our three old scholar vocalists!
Coro Angelico, Year 7 Choir, Whitby Chorale, Animando, Barbershop,St Hilda's Chorale

The standard of singing from all groups and the girls' professional manner on the night was exceptional. The music was challenging, particularly for the St Hilda's Chorale girls who learnt most of Benjamin Britten's A Ceremony on Carols off by heart, performing it faultlessly. Thank you to the following girls who sang their pieces beautifully: Renita Whittle, Sarah Cranfield, Rachel Granger, Georgina Hopetoun-Smith and Emily Templeton-Knight.

A highlight for many of the audience members was all 120 girls singing Adiemus with wonderful accompaniment from the Percussion Ensemble. Thanks must go to the staff involved; Virginia Page, Anna Hayward, Jordan Seinor, Tim Chapman, Nancy Ellis, Tess Tsokos, Louise Bladen and Louise Devenish.

All proceeds from the evening are being donated to the Heart Foundation in memory of Kiah French. Thank you to all the girls involved and who raised over $550.
