Last week, we honoured the spirit and legacy of St Hilda, a beacon of wisdom and courage, as we come together to celebrate St Hilda’s for both our Junior and Senior Schools.
Staying true to our School motto, Domine dirige nos
Annually, our School community convenes at St George’s Cathedral to commemorate St Hilda’s Day, a tradition that underscores our connection to a heritage rich in architecture, art, music, prayer, contemplation, and profound heritage.
Adhering to our guiding motto and principle of “Domine dirige nos,” which means “Lord direct us” in Latin, the founders of St Hilda’s instilled a sense of faith that inspired the creation of an educational institution for young women.
We are proud of the school’s trajectory and the numerous ongoing traditions that serve as a testament to our heritage, St Hilda’s Day being one of these significant celebrations.
A time for stillness and reflection
St Hilda cherished silent contemplation and extended a warm welcome to all who visited her abbey, a monastery for monks and nuns in Whitby, northern England. Her religious outlook was characterised by compassion, profound wisdom, a passion for the arts, and a deep appreciation for nature. She inspired people to heed the subtle promptings within their hearts, which hinted at a presence more significant than ourselves in the universe. She believed that there is light beyond any hardship we might face, allowing us to feel as light as a feather on the breath of God as we navigate life’s journey.
A place for all
While St George’s Cathedral is a well-known and cherished environment for many of our students, it may be less familiar to others. Among our School community, there is a spectrum of religious observance, from those who attend Church regularly to those who are experiencing a religious service for the first time during a Year 7 chapel service. At St Hilda’s, we embrace this variety! Those unfamiliar with church services often bring fresh and valuable insights to our collective understanding. Each individual within our School community is on a unique path in their spiritual exploration. The faith, hope, and love we share encourage and uplift us all. There is space for everyone to learn from one another and grow together.
