Our Year 2s have moved from reading to writing their own stories and picture books in order to enter the Children’s Book Council’s Make Your Own Story Book competition. To inspire our budding authors, the girls were fortunate to have a visit from award winning author and current parent Natasha Lester who talked about her own experiences in the writing process.
Natasha has published four books, another to be released in the coming months, and is currently working on another scheduled for release in 2019. The girls asked some in depth questions, including “What themes do you like to write about?” to which Natasha responded that she enjoyed writing about strong women who like to change society.
It was wonderful to see so many keen readers, gain a greater understanding how to gather ideas, research characters and locations as well as edit and rewrite their work.
Natasha revealed to the group that she loved to read at a very young age, and would escape into the exciting stories of the books. She shared a story she had written when she was in Year 2 before enjoying an opportunity to look at some of the girls’ creative work.
