Earlier this term, as part of the Compass Award<\/a>, our Year 5 students embarked on a Citizenship Mission with WaterAid<\/a>, taking part in the Walk for Water<\/a> initiative.<\/p>\n

WaterAid’s Walk for Water aims to raise funds and awareness for the millions of people worldwide who lack reliable access to clean water. Worldwide, almost one in ten people do not have clean water close to home, meaning hundreds of millions of people, especially women and girls, must endure long and hazardous walks to collect water from places that may not even be clean.<\/p>\n

At the beginning of the term, the students launched this program by hearing information about the initiative and from guest speakers who shared insights into their own fundraising efforts. The students learnt that this issue disproportionately affects women and girls, and that their support can help more girls access education. Following the information session, the cohort completed the first of five walks, together along the Swan River at Chidley Point. Throughout the term, students also undertook three independent walks as they continued to raise funds for the cause.<\/p>\n

This week, the students completed their final walk alongside their peers from Scotch College, walking around Lake Claremont. As they walked, the students carried water bottles, offering a small glimpse into the challenges and discomfort faced by children their age in less privileged parts of the world as they journey to collect water.<\/p>\n

Over the course of the term, students gathered donations to support WaterAid\u2019s vital work. We are proud to share that our girls have raised $4,176 so far to help improve access to clean water across the globe.<\/p>\n

This program has inspired our girls to develop a deeper awareness of others and consider how they can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those less fortunate. We look forward to seeing how they continue to show compassion and support for others throughout their journey at St Hilda\u2019s and beyond.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
