Next week we commence our Annual Giving campaign to support scholarships.<\/p>\n
Nothing brings me more joy than offering scholarships to those who need it most. This year I had the privilege of interviewing some incredible Year 6 students who applied for our needs-based Year 7 scholarships. Supported by their parents, teachers and principals, these girls demonstrated maturity beyond their years and a commitment to excel, given the opportunity.<\/p>\n
I believe that supporting young women to flourish in education is the only way to continue to reduce the gender equity gap that still exists in our workforce \u2013 particularly in WA where we suffer the greatest inequity across all levels of industry. Schools like ours have an obligation to empower girls to be the female leaders of the future.<\/p>\n
This year Rani (Year 8) will be the face of our Annual Giving campaign. Rani joined us as a full scholarship winner through the Malka Foundation. Like the girls I met this year, she was given one of our scholarship flyers by a teacher and urged to apply. Rani and her mum did their research, having never heard of St Hilda\u2019s, and her application was shortlisted.<\/p>\n
Upon meeting Rani I knew this bright, articulate young woman would flourish at St Hilda\u2019s and indeed she has. I regularly receive updates on her progress and she continues to impress and delight her teachers with her commitment to all pursuits, including and beyond simply academics.<\/p>\n
This year we also welcomed our first cohort of Madalah scholarship students. For these girls the adjustment is huge. All the girls have come from regional Western Australia and have not only had to adapt to a new school, they have also worked hard to adjust to boarding life, being away from home and making new friends. I am so proud of each and every one of the girls and the enormous effort they have made to make the most of the opportunities here. This year\u2019s NAIDOC Week has a special significance for us as the girls showcase their culture.<\/p>\n
I urge you to support our Annual Giving campaign next week. It\u2019s a chance to reflect on how privileged we are and share it with someone who deserves an opportunity.
