Decoding the Universe in the Classroom
Blog by Helen Walker – Head of Science
National Science Week is an opportunity to celebrate discovery, innovation and the power of curiosity. This year’s theme, Decoding the Universe, reminds us that science is about far more than equations and experiments – it’s about making sense of our world and our place in it.
The week’s program included the annual Year 12 Chemistry Titration Competition, an escape room challenge for our Year 7 Science classes, a Year 10 Pre-Medicine excursion to Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research and daily whole-school events like the homeroom quiz and a Coding Scavenger Hunt. It’s been wonderful to see students across all year levels throw themselves into these activities with enthusiasm. My thanks go to our dedicated Science staff, whose expertise and passion inspire our girls every day, and to our student Science Committee, whose creativity and organisation keep science at the forefront throughout the year.
In our Science classes, we see firsthand the energy and insight our girls bring to scientific inquiry. In an all-girls environment, students are free to take risks, challenge themselves, and lead without the weight of stereotypes, building the confidence to tackle even the most complex problems. We are incredibly proud of the large number of girls who choose ATAR science subjects and of our many Old Scholars who have gone on to make their mark in related fields, showing our current students the numerous pathways science can offer.
Girls Belong at the Frontline of Discovery
Encouraging girls to pursue science is not just about equity – it’s about unlocking talent and potential the world needs. Careers in science provide opportunities to address global challenges, from climate change to medical innovation, and to work at the cutting edge of discovery. Girls who study science gain skills in critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration that open doors in every industry.
When girls see themselves as scientists, they have the potential to spark extraordinary futures both for themselves and the world!
