Music at St Hilda’s

At St Hildas, we pride ourselves on having cultivated a tradition of musical excellence that resonates from Junior Kindergarten all the way through to Year 12. The school’s music program is not just about learning notes, it’s about nurturing confidence, community and creativity through sound.

For Music Week, we’re highlighting our Music Program that offers your daughter a variety of ensembles and performance opportunities within the school and beyond. From concerts and workshops to tours and festivals, we foster musical talent. Both Junior and Senior School students can join choirs, orchestras, bands and ensembles that meet weekly, helping your daughter to flourish musically and make valuable connections through a shared love of music.

A Symphony of Opportunities Across All Levels

From the very start, musical engagement is embedded in student life. The Primo Strings Program, available for Pre-Primary to Year 4, introduces young learners to the world of orchestral strings. Meanwhile, a Choral Program for Years 3–6 fosters early vocal development.

Senior students can choose from an extensive variety of ensembles that span classical, contemporary, instrumental, and vocal disciplines. These include:

– Senior Concert Band                      – Barbershop

– Clarinet Ensemble                           – Whitby Corale

– Intermediate Jazz                            – St Hilda’s Chorale

– Soul Band                                         – Taiko Drumming

– Chamber Strings Orchestra            – Saintly Jazz

– Flute Ensemble                                – Guitar Ensemble

– Saxophone Ensemble                     – Camerata Strings

– Intermediate Concert Band          – Brass Ensemble

A Culture of Joy, Dedication, & Harmony

Practising and performing are not just about the end result—students learn teamwork, perseverance, and precision through ensemble work.

Principal Fiona Johnston expresses our Music Department to be one that ‘extends and exposes students to rich and diverse music from around the world, helping to form an understanding of music’s role in place and time.’

This dynamic curriculum encourages creativity and excellence, starting with foundational skills in the Junior School and progressing to advanced performance opportunities in the Senior School.

Our vibrant music culture inspires students to develop a lifelong love of music and celebrate every performance.
