How to nurture play in the early years is something our Junior School educators understand deeply, recognising that play is far more than just fun. It is a vital part of early childhood development and one of the most powerful ways young girls learn about themselves and the world around them. Through carefully nurtured play experiences, students develop confidence, creativity, curiosity and meaningful connections with others, building the foundations for future learning and success.

From nature play and sensory exploration to imaginative adventures and collaborative activities, our students are encouraged to engage, discover and learn in ways that feel natural and joyful. Every day presents new opportunities to explore ideas, solve problems, build friendships and develop essential life skills through purposeful play.

Below are five tips to help you nurture play at home and support your child’s development in the early years.

1. Encourage exploration

Through exploration, experimentation and discovery, girls develop a natural love of learning and the confidence to try new things.

2. Make time for conversation

Whether they’re storytelling, role-playing or collaborating with friends, girls are constantly expanding their vocabulary, communication and listening skills.

3. Leave room for imagination

Open-ended play encourages innovation, problem solving and creative thinking, helping girls express themselves in meaningful ways.

4. Value play as learning

Every play experience supports growth. From building social skills to developing resilience and independence, play lays the foundation for lifelong learning.

5. Let her take the lead

Allow your daughter to choose what and how she plays. Following her interests builds confidence, independence and problem-solving skills.

At St Hilda’s, we believe play is at the heart of every child’s learning journey. Our nurturing environment encourages girls to explore, create, connect and grow through rich play-based experiences that inspire a lifelong love of learning.
