From The Principal

At the beginning of the new term we welcomed 23 new students from JK to Year 11. Three exchange students from France, Marie-Amelie Pasdeloup, Coline Schewin and Lucyl Staub will be St Hilda’s students for the first three weeks of term.

Four new members of staff join us for the term, replacing teachers on leave:
Mary Crielly, ICT/Multimedia replacing Basil Psanoudakis
Penny Gilmour, ELC replacing Liz Binder
Carla Sullivan, ELC replacing Ginette Barry
Neda Zare, ELC replacing Alex Hof

Already life is busy. Rowers, buoyed by the camp during the holidays, are working towards the final regattas.Saturday 1 August was the first regatta at Champion Lakes. St Hilda’s was host school and, helped by beautiful weather, the morning was a great success. Thank you to the parents in the Rowing Support Group for all their hard work.

On Friday 24 July, Year 11 students and their partners enjoyed a Cirque de Soleil theme for their dance. The School Hall was transformed by a team of parents led by Mandy McFarland, and school maintenance staff. Thank you to parents, the Head of Year 11, tutors and other staff who worked so hard to make the evening such a success.

This year’s production, The Sound of Music, opened at the Octagon Theatre, UWA, on Tuesday 4 August for three nights. Senior school students and staff were treated to a preview in assembly and clearly it is going to be an outstanding show. Get your tickets via the school website now.

Term 3 will see work start on the long-awaited swimming pool which will be constructed adjacent to the car park to the west of the Roger Goode. The first stage will begin in mid-August, with the drilling of a geothermal bore to heat the 51.5 meter pool, and eventually other buildings on the Bay View Campus. We are excited to be moving to the next big project of the master plan. There will be some disruption to the oval and PE staff have plans in place to ensure PE and sporting programs continue to run smoothly. Construction will not have an impact on other aspects of the curriculum. At this stage, we expect the pool to be completed by September 2010.

I will be taking the second half of my Long Service Leave between 5 August and 7 September. Dr Pam Garnett and Mrs Diana Stanley will be acting Principals in my absence as they have done previously.

Best wishes to you all for a satisfying Term 3. I look forward to catching up in September with all you have achieved.

Mrs Joy Shepherd

Chaplain's Message

This term my focus is especially on students and their faith journeys, especially those who are thinking about being confirmed in Week 9.  I look forward to a term of shared discovery of the ways in which God works in our lives, and of seeking God’s blessing as the journey towards the truth of God continues.

Any students who are still considering confirmation are welcome to come along to the meetings to find out more. I welcome all, whether or not their background is Christian.

The Chapel organ has recently received some long-awaited attention. Since its installation, it has been very hard to tune because of limited space, and the carpeted floor has deadened the acoustic response.  Now the whole organ has been moved forward and reflective panels have been installed on the walls behind, to prevent sound being absorbed into the sponge-like stone walls.  Various electronic improvements have been made, as is normal after more than ten years’ service, and a beautiful new jarrah floor was installed in the July holidays.  The whole instrument sounds much brighter, and ease of access will mean fewer visits by the tuners and a more stable sound.

Looking around the instrument’s insides, I was reminded of my first holiday job, aged 12, cleaning organ pipes and visiting churches all over Dorset (UK), from tiny villages to large towns, tuning and maintaining organs. Organs are fascinating pieces of machinery as well as musical instruments, and they are relatively rare in Western Australia. I look forward to hearing it played as a continuing contribution to our worship.

The Boarders attended St George’s Cathedral for their annual service, with the regular congregation, on Sunday 26 July.  I was pleased that Lucy Morris, Laura Haythornthwaite, Simone Bateman and Tarah Sweetman were able to join the Cathedral’s team of altar servers for the morning.  They performed their duties with flair and professionalism. Rebecca Wiener read the second reading with confidence and dignity, and Emily Higham led the prayers of intercession and administered the chalice with maturity and grace. Other senior students helped with various tasks and served morning tea while chatting to senior members of the congregation. St Hilda’s Boarders have many unique experiences, often unknown to the parents of day girls, and we should be proud that they represent the School so well on such occasions.

I continue to meet many Old Scholars in relation to weddings, baptisms, memorial services and funerals and enjoy hearing many stories about the School’s past.  Many holy and wise role models have passed through this ‘parish’ over the years, who continue to inspire and encourage Old Scholars late into their lives.  We will celebrate them and the current community as we begin preparations for our annual St Hilda’s Day services early next term.

I look forward to meeting parents and other members of the school community this semester.  Please contact me at any time if you have questions or concerns of a spiritual nature regarding your children or family.

Year News
Year 12

I hope that everyone has returned refreshed and ready to tackle the academic challenges of Term 3.  As this vital term unfolds, students are naturally thinking of both examinations and their future plans.  I hope that each girl has read her Semester 1 report critically and is acting upon the valuable advice from teachers.  It is time to put good intentions into action and to prioritise!

During this term each student has the opportunity to have an individual appointment with Mrs Arrowsmith, the Careers Adviser, or one of the two school counsellors, Mrs Helen Silver or Ms Charlotte Board.  They will discuss a range of options and strategies with each girl and issue a transition plan that parents may like to discuss with their daughter. In the Career Education classes held this term, representatives of all the major tertiary institutions will talk to students.  Those girls who are tertiary bound will also work through the TISC guide to ensure that they know how to make their applications for university and TAFE.  In general, all applications for tertiary study in WA must be in by Wednesday 30 September 2009.

I hope that fathers are dusting off their dinner jackets and dancing shoes for the much anticipated Father/Daughter Dinner on Thursday 20 August.  Girls must make sure they return their forms with seating requests to Kiran in the Development Office as soon as possible.  It will no doubt be a lovely occasion and a nice way of celebrating the half-way mark of Term 3, the final term of teaching for our class of 2009.

Best wishes for a happy and productive term.

Jane Putigny - Head of Year 12

Year 11

With the commencement of Term 3 the Year 11 girls are actively involved in many activities at school.  In the first week of term we welcomed back our skiers from the ski trip who were excellent ambassadors for the School.  They can be very proud of their behaviour.  Our best wishes go to all of the girls involved in The Sound of Music at the Octagon Theatre on August 4, 5 and 6 and we look forward to seeing what will be another fantastic production this year.

The Year 11 Dance was held on Friday 24 July with the red carpet rolling out this year for a Cirque Du Dance theme.  The School Hall became a carnival of colour with circus performers, popcorn machines and face painters in the marquee.  Once again the organisation for such an event is enormous and I especially thank Suzanne Finn, Tina Jacobs, Philippa Packer, Chris McCleod and their teams of helpers who transformed the School Hall for the girls and their partners to step into the world of Cirque Du Soleil.  The creativity of the Dance Committee truly embraced and captured the festivities and atmosphere of the theme on the night.  To the other parents who assisted in various ways – thank you.  Thank you also to the Maintenance Department for its help and the fantastic group of girls who volunteered on the night to assist with serving food and drinks.  I would also like to thank Mandy McFarland in the Development Office for all her hard work assisting the Dance Committee, and the Year 11 Tutors and staff who helped me with running the evening.  Mrs Shepherd, the Year 11 Tutors and I were thrilled with the way the girls and their partners conducted themselves at the Dance on Friday night.  I commend the girls and thank all families for their support in making the evening such a memorable and happy occasion for all.  The girls have been able to view the Dance photos online at www.class-photo.com and they will shortly receive an order form for purchasing photos.  Please complete and return the envelope to your daughter’s tutor with a cheque or money enclosed by Tuesday 25 August.

An important date for your diary is Tuesday 1 September which is the Year 11 Evensong service for 2009 at 5pm in the School Chapel.  The Year 11 tutors will be reinforcing that attendance is compulsory for all Year 11 girls.

Order forms for the Year 12 2010 Leavers’ Jumpers will be distributed shortly to your daughter.  Please complete the order form and include payment details by Thursday 25 September to your daughter’s tutor.  Cost of the jumper for 2010 is $82.00.

Term 3 is particularly exciting for the Year 11s as it includes the elections for next year’s officials.  It is also fantastic to see that so many of the girls have completed Community Service hours this year.  I encourage those girls who have completed hours of service to see Father Toby or me to ensure their log books are updated and their hours of service recorded.

Finally, it was very pleasing to see so many Year 11 students achieve impressive results in their Semester 1 reports.  This is now an important time for the girls to consolidate their academic studies, especially as Term 3 is the final term of their Year 11 courses.  Some girls may need consultation in this area and I encourage them to act immediately by approaching their course teachers, frequent the Tutoring Centre or see me for assistance.  Girls who have questions concerning course selection for Year 12 should see the School Counsellor, Mrs Helen Silver, in Student Services who is replacing Ms Diane Maseyk while she is on leave in Semester 2.

Best wishes for the remainder of this term.

Kathryn Paul -Head of Year 11
Year 10

This term has begun with rapid pace and many of the Year 10 students are displaying enthusiastic and encouraging school spirit everyday. Girls have been singing, dancing and helping backstage to all hours of the evening in preparation for the School Production of The Sound of Music. We look forward to seeing the finished product very soon.

Other students have begun training and playing in their various IGSSA teams for soccer, rowing, athletics and basketball. We also have several Year 10 students dedicating their weekends to prepare themselves for their upcoming Pilgrimage of Hope to Nepal. Lastly, our musicians have been up early in the morning rehearsing in various bands and choirs. I encourage anyone who feels she is not taking the plentiful opportunities the School offers to find her niche and become involved or support those who are by attending and cheering on their peers who dedicate hours to their commitments.

The two Year 10 camps are coming up shortly. The girls have been informed about many aspects of the camp by Miss Freedman and will hear from our Year 11 girls on their exciting adventures from last year. Students have received instructions and equipment lists and must make sure they have appropriate clothing, comfortable shoes, outdoor equipment and a sleeping bag. Sleeping bags can be hired from the Outdoor Education Department. Ipods and mobile phones are not allowed on the trip and we ask that you ensure this is adhered to. The camp is a rewarding and once-in-a-lifetime experience that many St Hilda’s students regard as a school highlight.

While half the group is on camp, the other half will undertake work experience at various placements. Some of the places girls visit include vets, schools, physiotherapists, radio and television stations and law firms. Forms were due last term, so I remind any student who has not handed in her form to do so immediately. Mrs Arrowsmith or I will assist girls who are experiencing problems finding a placement.

The School continues to receive fantastic feedback regarding the wonderful work the Year 10s do in their 20-hour Community Service Programs. I congratulate the students who have completed their hours. I wish all the students and families an enjoyable and rewarding time for the remainder of the term.

Important dates for your information:

  • Monday 31 August, 7:00pm, Year 10 Camp Parent Information Evening in the staff room.
  • Saturday 10 October 7:30am, camp 1 departs and returns Friday 16 October 3:00pm
  • Saturday 7 November 7:30am, camp 2 departs and returns Friday 13 November 3:00pm
Jo Swain - Head of Year 10
Year 9

The Interhouse Athletics Carnival was an exciting way to end Term 2.  I congratulate the many Year 9 students who achieved personal bests on the day.  Particular congratulations go to Sophie Meagher who was the Field Runner-Up and Olivia Terpkos who was Field Champion.  Congratulations also go to Charlotte Campbell who was Track Runner-Up and Emily Moran who was Track Champion.

We warmly welcome two new girls to Year 9.  Ketisha Gill is a boarder from Albany and she has joined 9B1 and Saacha Maloney is a day girl who has joined 9B2.

Term 3 is a very important academic period for Year 9 students.  Over the holidays, you will have had time to sit down and reflect on your daughter’s progress in Semester 1.  It was very pleasing to read the many positive teacher comments in reports which confirm the positive attitude of Year 9 students.  The reporting period is also a timely reminder for students of the need to keep their diaries and planners up-to-date, particularly as the academic program becomes more challenging in Semester 2.

At the start of the year, the girls were introduced to our theme ‘The 3 Rs of Year 9’.  Unlike the traditional 3 Rs, the program focuses on resilience, responsibility and reflection.  This term we put a number of elements of the second R of Year 9 (responsibility) into action by looking at ways that we can support others who are less fortunate in our Perth community, and, later in the term, the wider global community.

We began the Year 9 Pastoral Care program this term with a visit from Father Mark McCracken and Jillian Fraser.  Father Mark runs a Chaplaincy for Anglicare and Jillian Fraser is the Fundraising Coordinator of Anglicare, WA.  Part of Father Mark’s role is to support the programs of Daisy House.  Daisy House provides community support in the northern suburbs of Perth including emergency food relief and running playgroups. It also provides short-term accommodation assistance, counselling and emotional support to many children and parents. It also runs a Community in the Park program in which volunteers create opportunities for children and their families to have a more active lifestyle and increase community interaction and friendships in local parks. Year 9s are currently organising a special gold coin donation Free Dress Day for all students from Year 7 to Year 12 and they will continue to look for practical ways to support Anglicare and Daisy House over the rest of the year.  Year 9s will also be running Blue and Red cake and biscuits stalls for staff and students and they are taking on random acts of kindness around the school as they embrace facets of responsibility this term.

I would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard on this year’s school production of The Sound of Music. As this report goes to press we are all looking forward to a spectacular week at the Octagon Theatre. The cast, musicians and backroom crew are well represented by Year 9s and I look forward to commenting on their work and performances in the next Newsletter.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the Semester 1 Tutor Group Captains and Deputies for the hard work and the strong leadership skills they displayed.  This ensured the smooth running of many events.  I also congratulate the following girls who have been elected to these important positions in Semester 2 and I look forward to working with them:

Year 8

Welcome back to all parents for Semester 2; we have a busy term planned and the key events to look out for are the Interschool IGSSA Athletics, House Quiz, Head of the River, mid-term break and the Senior School photo day.

The pastoral care program will focus this semester on bullying and friendship issues. As you may be aware, cyberbullying is an ever-present concern amongst teens and, this term, students will witness a performance over two sessions which deals with the main issues including strategies to cope with cyberbullying. The Australian Government has recently directed considerable resources to this issue and I encourage you visit the websites below to help gain an insight into the dangers facing students.

http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/ ; http://www.bullyingnoway.com.au/
http://www.cybernetrix.com.au/

I congratulate the girls on their participation in the Interhouse Athletics Carnival last term. The Year 8 girls were well attired and the House spirit was well and truly evident amongst the students.  The individual champions for Year 8 were:

Field Events

Track
Champion: Lara Ashford (GA), Runner-Up: India Zimpel (BL)

The new tutor group Captains and Deputy Captains for Semester 2 have been chosen, and I congratulate the following girls:

During the term a large amount of property gets misplaced.  These items can be claimed from lost property or, if they are named, we can return them to the owners.  However, often they are not named and I have therefore asked the girls to check that all items of property, especially clothing, are named and would appreciate it if parents would assist in this matter.  Sometimes students accidentally pick up items that do not belong to them and it becomes distressing for owners who then have to purchase replacements if they are not returned.

I wish you well for the rest of the year.

Luke Bostelman – Head of Year 8

Year 7

Welcome back to all students and their families, and a very special welcome to Katherine Chen and her family who have joined the St Hilda’s community.  We have heard many tales from the girls of travels both near and far.  It was pleasing to see the girls look relaxed, refreshed and ready for another busy term.

I congratulate the following girls who are Year 7 tutorial Captains and Deputies for Term 3:

7B1 - Captain Abigail Lyons, Deputy  Alice Campbell
7D1 - Captain Hannah Steel, Deputy Amber O’Donnell
7F1 - Captain Alice Watts, Deputy Imogen Everist
7G1 - Captain Kyla Plani, Deputy Alison Walsh

Congratulations also to Gabriela Bekir Fuente and Clara Forbes who have been elected Year 7 Representatives for Semester 2.

This term the students are learning to set realistic goals and discussing ways to work towards achieving them.  They have been reflecting on their Semester 1 reports, focusing on the comments teachers have made.  The aim is to encourage the girls to work towards making improvements this semester.  This will help the students to gain an understanding of how they can benefit from failure as well as from success, and how setting and achieving goals of their own choice can boost their self-confidence and self -esteem, and help them to take control of their learning.

Thank you to all parents who have returned their daughters’ 2010 Year 8 Subject Option forms.  If you have not returned the forms please do so as soon as possible to enable planning for 2010 to begin.

The Schedule of Events for this term outlines the many opportunities the students will have to immerse themselves in school life.  Miss Martinez, Mr Babbage, Mr Carlton and I wish them continued success this semester.

Allison Stralow - Head of Year 7

St Hilda’s has been awarded the Eric Carlin Prize in recognition of being the top secondary school in the West Australian Young Writers’ Competition. St Hilda’s had 13 winners and four finalists. The winners will attend the award ceremony on 8 August. This is an amazing achievement, and, when we have more details, we will announce the girls’ names and prizes in the Newsletter. Please watch this space.

Visual Arts
The Elizabeth Hemsley Art and Design Centre at the Bay View Campus has now been officially opened. Elizabeth Hemsley was a parent of two daughters, Meredith and Conor, who attended St Hilda’s. Elizabeth had a flair for Art, and, following her sudden death, the Hemsley family decided to honour her by providing funds to refurbish the Art and Design Centre for all current and future students to enjoy.  Visitors are welcome to enter through the art gallery space.

Welcome to our new Year 8 Art classes for Semester 2.  We know the girls will thoroughly enjoy their art experience.  So far one class has walked down to the river to draw ‘en plein air’ and another class has studied the anatomy of insects.

Many accolades go to some of our budding artists for recent fine achievements in Visual Arts.Year 11 student Denise Scheer was shortlisted and achieved a High Commendation in the 2009 Shaun Tan Young Artists Awards which were held at Subiaco Library.

On Tuesday 28 July, Mrs Shepherd and I had the pleasure of witnessing the exciting achievement of Grace Lee-Tuck, Year 12, as she was announced the overall winner of the 2009 St George’s Cathedral Awards.  This year’s theme was ‘connectivity’ and Grace won with her sculptural work entitled, Mind, Body, Soul.  This is a prestigious event held each year for Years 10 to 12 in secondary schools across Western Australia.  This year, approximately 160 works are entered and displayed in St George’s Cathedral, Perth.

Congratulations to the following students whose artworks were selected for entry in the St George’s Cathedral Awards.

IGSSA Athletics
The Athletics season has started with much excitement.  We have had record numbers at training and, with our new program working with Iona, motivation is high.  The short distance to Davis oval and Iona’s gym has been managed with ease. The girls have been punctual and the sessions are well organised and interesting.

Our record turn-out at the new ’Perry Lakes Stadium’, now known as the WA  Athletics Centre on Monday 27 July, had the other schools thinking.  The competitions run by Athletics WA for all schools which are interested in gaining competition experience on the new surface and familiarising themselves with the facility have been an innovative addition to our training program.

Jemima Guelfi (Year 12) ran a confident 1500m, leading out with strength and maintaining a steady pace to finish with a time she was happy with for her first race of the term.  Our hurdlers ran well, noting their strengths and identifying their weaknesses to work on for next training.  Lily Longley (Year 8), our record-breaking high jumper from 2008, had an excellent jumping experience, nearly reaching her record height in the permitted five jumps.  Another one to watch is javelin thrower Sabina Puzey (Year 8).  She is committed and trains consistently which will undoubtedly ensure improvement over the next seven weeks.  Eloise Foskett (Year 11) was a stand-out in her Year group, showing strength of character and commitment to St Hilda’s Athletics with her attendance and persistence at the Monday event.

Monday training will be in the morning at WA Athletics Centre and in the afternoon at the same venue for competition, so please read the schedule carefully.

Thank you to all the parents who drop their daughters at the early trainings and collect them at the conclusion; your time and effort is invaluable.

We are looking forward to a season of consistent training and improvement which will ultimately be obvious in our result for IGSSA Athletics Tuesday 15 September 2009.

Basketball
The basketball season has begun with incredible enthusiasm and dedication.  Attendance at training is vital for team development and to ensure all girls quickly learn new skills and strategies to use in their upcoming games.

Schedules for all teams are available from the Physical Education Department.

Girls are required to wear blue grand slam shirt, school sports shorts, blue sports socks and non-marking sneakers.  We thank all our wonderful coaches for their time and preparation for all training and games and look forward to a very successful season. If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Miss Swain in the Physical Education Department.

Hockey
Congratulations to all girls who have been involved in the 2009 IGSSA Hockey season.  It has been an exciting time for the girls with the inclusion of the new rule ‘self play’.  The rule aims to open up play through the midfield, making it more continuous and eliminating the direct shot into the circle which can be dangerous at times with deflections.  The girls took on the challenge and started to use the new rule to their advantage in the latter part of the season, seeing the benefits it provided.  We have had some outstanding results this season with our Years 7/8B team weaving its magic through the competition without a loss.  Our Senior B and Junior B girls also proved difficult opponents, both finishing 2nd.

As a group we need to work on fitness and improve the basic skills which let us down in our matches. We were unable to finish off matches and teams that were fitter (not more skilled) were able to capitalise on this.  These are very easy aspects of the game to improve on, and, with a little hard work, we can make sure we are there at the finish.  Once again, some important foundations have been set for next year and we look forward to the challenges ahead.

Thank you to all team captains who always ensured teams were organised and ready to play.  You all did a great job.

Congratulations to Anjelica Mallis (Yr 11) who was selected to represent the School in the IGSSA Allstars Hockey team, to play in the annual match against the Hotspurs.  This year girls were given the opportunity to play against a visiting hockey team from Scotland and the State U16 team.  Anjelica is also a member of the State U16 team which travels away this month.  We wish her all the best for the tournament.  Congratulations must also go to Imogen Everist (Yr 7) who was also selected in the State School Sports Primary Girls’ Team.

We are very fortunate to have such fantastic coaches at St Hilda’s.  Their knowledge and experience is vital to the development of the girls’ skills and techniques. Some of our girls have been fortunate to receive group coaching from our national players.  These experiences are a wonderful opportunity to work at an elite level and I hope the girls continue to make the most of every opportunity.

IGSSA Cross Country
The cross country season is over for another year with the St Hilda’s Team making great improvements over the season.  Training this year has been fantastic.  Numbers have been really high and there is a great team spirit and bond that the girls are developing with their own mini-competitions at training.  This year every girl who made the squad had to fight for her spot on the team, which made training very competitive.  The girls motivated each other to become better runners and athletes, maintained a healthy mutual respect for one another and supported each girl’s achievements.

The team finished 5th overall which is one place higher than last year.  The Years11/12 team, led by Team Captain Hannah Castle and Deputy Jemima Guelfi finished 4th  only 25 points behind 2nd place.  Hannah finished in 4th place and Isobelle Stanley in 14th.  The Year 9 team led Captain by Susannah Stockwell and Deputy Emily Moran finished 5th only 32 points behind 1st place.  Susannah won the Year 9 race by almost a minute from her nearest competitor.  The Years 7, 8 and 10 runners all finished a respectable 6th.
Congratulations to all girls who competed on the day and to all the girls who trained and contributed to the improvements made by the team this year.  Thank you to the coaches; Head Coach Courtney Carter, Anna White, Nicole Chiam and Verity Foulkes-Taylor for their enthusiasm and dedication to the girls over many weeks and events.

Finally, good luck to Hannah Castle, Susannah Stockwell, Isobelle Stanley and Jemima Guelfi who all qualified for the State team which travels to Nowra in NSW on the 27th August- 1st September for the National titles.

Remember to keep running and stay fit until next season.

IGSSA Soccer
The IGSSA Soccer season is about to begin for 2009.  The popularity of soccer is ever- increasing with 155 girls signing up looking for a spot in one of the five IGSSA teams.  The girls (especially the junior girls) displayed a high level of skill at the trials. All games will start in Week 4 when the School Production is over. Training is still on twice a week and will move to Davis Oval on commencement of the construction of the new pool.  The training times are as follows:
Yr 7/8 and Seniors    Monday and Wednesday 3.45-5.15pm at St Hilda’s Oval or Davis Oval
Juniors Tuesday & Thursday 3.45-5.15pm            at St Hilda’s Oval or Davis Oval
When fixtures start, games will be on both days.

As soccer is a winter sport and not all the venues have shelter, we advise you to bring wet weather gear if there is any chance of rain.  For safety reasons please ensure that you bring your soccer boots and shin pads/guards to all sessions.

Finally, remember to bring your water bottle and any medicine or puffers (ventolin etc) to all sessions. Good luck to all girls and coaches for the 2009 season.

Rowing
All our rowers attended rowing camp at Guildford Grammar from July 16 to19.  All crews used the camp to hone their techniques in many water sessions, using the rowing tank and participating in kick boxing and power yoga.  Crews spent multiple sessions training at Champion Lakes to familiarise themselves with the new international -standard rowing course. The camp was also designed to develop team spirit between Year groups. Other activities included a quiz night and a cinema trip, culminating in a St Hilda’s Intra-club Regatta held at Champion Lakes before returning home.  Well done to the Year 9A Eight crews which performed very well in its races.

Margaret Hays came and shared her nutrition advice with the girls. All of the girls learnt that they need to make better food choices, including adding more serves of protein and carbohydrates into their diets to give their bodies enough fuel to train and perform to their optimal potential, and to ensure that they stay well hydrated.

Thank you to all parents who came and helped to cook breakfast and lunch for the girls over the camp period. Your help was much appreciated and the camp could not have been held without your assistance.

St Hilda’s host regatta took place on Saturday 1 August.  This was the first school girl regatta to be held at the Champion Lakes Rowing Course, so it was a new challenge for the organisers.  Thank you to Tina Jacobs and Simone Brown for their efforts in organising a successful event and setting a high standard for all future regattas at Champion Lakes.  Many people contributed to making the day run as smoothly as it did. Thank you to the maintenance staff, the Physical Education staff, the Development Office, and the many parents who worked tirelessly to achieve great success.

All crews can be proud of their efforts at the regatta, with many crews rowing in their combinations for the first time on that day due to the many disruptions to trainings since camp, as the flu season has arrived. Please ensure that if you are unable to attend a training session, you phone Sandy Burt, our head rowing coach, on 0418 917 581 prior to the session so that the training can be modified according to numbers present. It was such an amazing regatta with crews being very close to the spectators. It has brought a new element to the competition with crews being able to hear supporters clearly as they race down the course.

Please come and support our crews at the Head of the River Regatta on Saturday 15 August at Champion Lakes. The girls have been training for five months for this event. The regatta commences at 8.25am with the First Eight race scheduled for just after 12pm with presentations following the final race. Any girls who are considering rowing next year should come on down and see the girls in action and see what this sport is all about. If you have not yet been to a rowing regatta at Champion Lakes you will be amazed to see the racing up close. Your cheers could help lift the crews to a higher result in their races. If you would like further information please contact clare.reeson@sthildas.wa.edu.au.
