Old Scholar Career Profile: Kate Parker (2005)

As we approach the OSA Art Exhibition we turn our focus to the Arts and feature Old Scholar, Kate Parker (2005), who has forged her career through a range of institutions, ventures, events and profiles. Kate is Senior Principal Social and Cultural at Element Advisory (and Founder), Temp Gallery Founder, and founder of new platform DASH.
Kate Parker’s career journey exemplifies the power of following curiosity and embracing unexpected opportunities. What began as a traditional path in architecture has evolved into a multifaceted career spanning arts consulting, gallery curation, and creative entrepreneurship.
After graduating from St Hilda’s in 2005, Kate was drawn to architecture as a career path that brought together creativity and pragmatism. After completing her Master of Architecture at UWA, she gained valuable international experience through an internship at renowned online design magazine Dezeen, which opened many doors upon her return to Perth.
Kate’s transition into the cultural sector began after realising she wanted to work more closely with creatives across different disciplines, not just within the field of architecture. This led to a role at not-for-profit arts organisation FORM, where she was immediately thrown into the deep end – managing international street artists for a series of large-scale murals throughout Perth’s CBD for the PUBLIC festival, including organising the closing parties and activations in a vacant carpark.

Her final project at FORM showcased her strategic thinking and project management skills: transforming Claremont’s derelict Goods Shed into the cultural hub it is today. This involved writing a business case, raising funding, working with architects, and managing the project through to completion. Kate also curated an exhibition at The Goods Shed by Martu artist Gloria, before her next career move.
In 2018, Kate joined Element Advisory (part of SLR), where she established the arts and cultural consultancy offering. Under Kate’s leadership, the team has delivered some of Western Australia’s most significant cultural projects, with over $20 million in public art commissions currently in the pipeline. In 2022, Kate became a Director of the company and commenced an MBA through Curtin University (completed in late 2024), to strengthen her skills in her role as director. At the end of 2024, Element Advisory was acquired by global consultancy SLR.
Kate is particularly excited about current commissions for two Perth high schools – public art projects that involve students in their development – and working with nationally recognised artists for commissions across residential developments in Perth. In 2025 Kate has also developed and launched a platform for managing public art collections for local and state government agencies.
Responding to gaps she identified in the market, Kate has recently launched two innovative ventures. Temp, a contemporary gallery with no fixed address, connects new collectors with early career artists and affordable art via ‘temporary’ locations. “I noticed there was a gap in the market for early career artists to show work, without their fees being entirely eroded by gallery commissions”, she says.

An installation shot of the Temp200 exhibition.
Operating with minimal overheads allows Temp to charge very low commission fees, with most funds going directly to artists. A recent highlight was the Temp200 exhibition – an open call for Western Australian artists where all works were A5 size and sold for $200 each. With over 200 submissions and 400+ artworks displayed, it was “an incredible exhibition and one I look forward to running again.”
Kate’s second venture, DASH, emerged from personal necessity. While juggling work, Temp, her MBA, and wedding planning, she found herself spending too much time on life administration tasks. “I wanted to streamline this for myself – to save time so I could spend it on the things I really wanted to focus on,” she says. Finding nothing in the market that met her needs, she decided to create it herself.

Kate remains connected to St Hilda’s through career mentoring and with a role on the school’s art advisory panel.
As a passionate supporter of the arts, Kate serves on the board of The Lester Prize, and is a PICA Art1000 和 AGWA Foundation donor, and an Indian Ocean Craft Triennial (IOTA) Ambassador. She is also a member of the Art Consulting Association of Australia.
Her advice to current St Hilda’s students interested in creative careers reflects her own experience: “The job you want or will end up in you probably don’t know about yet. Follow what interests you and sparks curiosity. Say yes to things that challenge you.”
Kate credits St Hilda’s with fostering the friendships that remain important in her life today, and her parents’ attitude that “there were no limits to what I could do with my life if I put my mind to it.” Living in Northbridge with her documentary filmmaker husband, Kate continues to build bridges between creativity and commerce.
As she reflects on her journey: “I couldn’t have imagined where my career would take me – I didn’t know such a thing as an art consultant was a role I could have.”

充满力量的声音和实用的见解
The Summit began with a warm welcome from the Old Scholars’ Association, followed by an energising speech from Fiona Johnston, Principal of St Hilda’s and OSA Patron. Julie Colvin (Stephen, 1989), Managing Partner at Derwent, shared her invaluable expertise on knowing your worth and guided attendees through setting meaningful career goals, navigating transitions with clarity, and advocating for their value in the workplace.

With over two decades of experience in the financial sector and her own background as a working mother of three, Amanda has inspired many to take confident steps toward their financial future.
Our keynote speaker, Lizzie Landels (2002), came from the United States to share her journey from international law to her current role as Chief of Staff at Microsoft. Lizzie spoke on embracing change, working in digital policy, and navigating a global career.
真正的对话和持久的联系
The evening concluded with a panel discussion hosted by OSA Committee Member, 米歇尔-布鲁姆(马弗莱特,1989 年), where all four speakers came together to share personal experiences and reinforce the importance of women championing women.
We’re very grateful to each of our incredible speakers, our sponsors, organisers, and to those who attended this special event. Your energy and enthusiasm made the evening unforgettable.

2025 70+ Morning Tea
On Wednesday 13 August, 130 Old Scholars returned to the School Hall for the annual OSA 70+ Morning Tea, and enjoyed catching up with their peer group, raffles, sandwiches and slices made by the current Food & Technology students.
-
- Joan Newton (Coulsell, 1955), Fleta Lidbury (Natrass, 1955), Lennie McCall Rush (1955), Deanne Newman (Benney, 1956), and Margie Halcombe (Buckeridge, 1959)
Those from the Classes of 1972 and older were invited to attend – with the Class of 1956 being the largest group at 14 attendees.
We also celebrated the centenary birthday of Vivienne Jackson (Johnston,1942) who will turn 100 in May.
Vivienne was born in the same year as Queen Elizabeth II and in the year that the first transatlantic phone call was made. She was 13 when WWII broke out and the population of Australia was just over 6 million and vacuum cleaners had just been introduced as the most modern piece of domestic technology.

Isabella Honey (2016), Victoria Parker (2016), Jill Binning (Mansel,1960) and Amanda Burt (Coad,1989).
Thanks must go to the OSA Committee volunteers and the School Development team, who set up the Hall the day before, decorating the tables with jonquils and daffodils, and who served on the day. Also, to Chris from the Facilities Team, for providing a shuttle service from the Mosman Park Bowling Club to the School Hall. And to the Year 7s for singing Happy Birthday and handing out the delicious chocolate cake afterwards (with some to spare for their lunchtime!).
Thank you also to Sandra Naude for preparing a walk down memory lane with photographs of the 1940s, 50s, 60s and early 70s, taken from the archives and shown on the new screen.
We look forward to seeing so many of you next year, and the Class of 1973.
Jordanna Ripp (2000) visits St Hilda's Year 8s
The Year 8 students were treated to a visit from Los Angeles-based Old Scholar Jordanna Ripp (2000) when they returned from break on 23 July. Jordanna is an entertainment Digital and Social Media Marketer and Talent Mentor who runs her own company in Los Angeles and lists some impressive celebrity clients on her books.

The Year 8s (who face social media age-restrictions) were given a valuable insight into how the big social media companies glean data from viewers, how influencers work, and the dangers of social media.
The Year 8s were most excited to learn that Jordanna has some famous reality stars on her books and were keen to know who she had met in person in LA.
Thank you Jordanna for returning to St Hilda’s whilst in Perth, and for sharing your experience with the Year 8s and giving an informed talk.

Congratulations to Clare Hughes (2018) in London West End Role
The Old Vic Theatre Company has just announced the full cast for the UK premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning Tracy Lett’s play Mary Page Marlowe.

Mary Page Marlowe is a non-linear play that portrays the life of an ordinary Ohio accountant through fragments of memories and moments, feature six different actresses portraying the character at various stages. The play uses this fragmented structure to reflect the complex, contradictory nature of identity and memory, showing how life choices, both major and mundane, shape a person over time, even from their own perspective.
Our congratulations to Clare for landing this role in a high profile London West End production.
