What makes St Hilda’s Junior School different?
Your daughter begins her journey on our dedicated Junior School campus, designed specifically for young girls to explore, discover and grow with confidence in a safe and nurturing environment.
We focus on strong academic foundations from the earliest years, particularly in literacy and numeracy, alongside a culture where every girl is known, supported and encouraged to thrive.
Signature programs enrich this journey, including Units of Curiosity, ESSTEAM and Little Wanderers, as well as leadership opportunities such as the Harvard research-based leadership program in Year 5 and the Compass Award with Scotch College.
A highlight is the Year 6 Production, where every girl performs on stage in the Joy Shepherd Performing Arts Centre, building confidence and a sense of achievement.
What year groups does the Junior School cover?
St Hilda’s Junior School runs from Junior Kindy through to Year 6. The school is co-educational in Junior Kindy and Kindergarten, becoming all-girls from Pre Primary onwards.
What approach do you take to literacy and numeracy?
At St Hilda’s, strong foundations begin early. In Junior Kindy and Kindy, we prioritise literacy and numeracy through our play-based approach. With early literacy and numeracy skills being the largest indicator of future academic success, our Pre Primary to Year 2 program is about developing the foundational skills to underpin all future learning. Our focus on strong foundations continues in Years 3 and 4, where dedicated literacy and numeracy instruction exceeds mandated hours. By Year 5, girls at St Hilda’s are ready to shift from learning to doing. Literacy and numeracy foundations are in place. Curiosity is established.
How is learning tailored to my daughter’s individual needs?
Our teachers take the time to understand each girl as an individual, using small group learning, additional support and targeted instruction to respond to her needs at the right time.
We use a differentiated approach to learning, recognising that girls progress at different paces. Through a combination of support, intervention, enrichment and acceleration, we personalise learning so that every girl is both supported and challenged as she grows in confidence and capability.
How do you support my daughter’s wellbeing?
Wellbeing is embedded in every aspect of school life. Our nurturing environment supports each girl’s mental, physical and emotional development, helping her feel safe, confident and ready to learn. Our personalised approach means every girl is truly known by her teachers. Relationships are central, allowing us to support each child’s growth, both academically and personally.
Do girls use devices in the Junior School?
- Our JK and Kindergarten classrooms are device free, ensuring girls are fully present and engaged in purposeful, intentional learning experiences.
-
Pre Primary – Year 2 are also device free for general teaching and learning, but will have access to technology for the teaching of the Digital Technology curriculum only.
-
Years 3 – 6 will have access to devices. These will be formatted to provide access only to the required software to teach the curriculum and will not be taken home.
Where is the Junior School campus?
The Junior School operates from the dedicated Chidley Campus in Mosman Park, Perth, separate from the Senior School, on a three-hectare site designed specifically for younger learners. It provides open spaces, nature play areas and purpose built learning environments that support different ways of learning for young girls to discover, imagine, explore, and be curious.
Is after-school care available?
Yes. Extend Australia runs before and after school care from the Chidley Campus, covering 7am to 8:45am and 2:30pm to 6pm, with holiday programs also available.
The Library is also open for quiet activities from:
- 7.30am-8.10am Monday-Friday
- After school, Monday-Thursday until 4.15pm
What cocurricular opportunities are available in Junior School?
Girls have access to a wide range of opportunities including music, sport, drama and creative pursuits, allowing them to explore their interests and build confidence beyond the classroom.
There are approximately 30 cocurricular opportunities available in the Junior School, running before and after school. These are offered both internally by staff and through external providers, giving girls a broad and diverse range of experiences to choose from.
Can my daughter attend a trial or discovery day?
Yes. To ensure St Hilda’s is the right fit for your daughter, we encourage you to book a Discovery Day once you have attended a tour of the school. Designed for girls in Years 2-6, this full-day experience will allow her to meet our passionate teachers, connect with friendly students, and gain an authentic glimpse into life as a St Hilda’s girl. We can also tailor her visit to reflect her interests.
